- YYZ International Arrivals
Landed in Eastern Time in Saturday daylight, having started on subway 22 hours ago in China time. Expect to be back in this airport terminal in 14 hours, for short hop in the same time zone. Cooler here than my Asian destinations, still feels like spring. (Toronto Pearson Airport Terminal 1 international arrivals) 20160319 - YUL Duty Free
Linear ceiling lights on the long walk from domestic gates to international. Passed time on phone calls before flying over the Atlantic. Appreciating the French influence while still in Canada. (YUL Montreal Trudeau Airport) 20161124 - Young Centre
Play reading of @NormanYeung Theory @Soulpepper Tiger-Bamboo Festival @YoungCentre RBC Studio. Storyline carried mostly by words, with actors rising from chairs and raising reading stands. Story of university lecturer using social media outside of academic institution hits close to home, but I don't teach film studies. (Young Centre for the Performing Arts, Tank House Lane, Distillery District, Toronto, Ontario) 20160528 - Yonge-Dundas Square
IndieFriday with @MelanieBrulee @YDSquare @FrancoFete tunes en Français, with introductions some in English. Wandered around Ryerson University, Yonge Street and Toronto Eaton Centre with sister who hasn't lived here for some decades. Points of references are spaces and businesses that have since changed. (Yonge-Dundas Square, Toronto, Ontario) 20160715 - Yonge Street at Yorkville Avenue
Facades of heritage 1870s-1890s Yonge Street buildings (John Oram, #836; Moses Staunton, #838-844; James Weir, #846-848A; Charles Frogley, #850) are being preserved as incorporated into a luxury 58-storey glass and steel tower at 1 Yorkville under construction. The storefronts are empty. In the lot behind, there's a big pit with construction machines digging. Neighbourhood was quiet on a Saturday when festivals were drawing crowds elsewhere. (1 Yorkville Avenue at Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20160611 - Yonge and Dundas
Scramble crosswalk gives 20 seconds to clear intersection around 10:20pm on a Thursday night in July. City is still active with pedestrians on a weekday, will be busier on the weekend. Heat alert during the day, so a late night bike ride still warm in midsummer. (Yonge Street at Dundas Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20160721 - Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
Tom Sachs (2007) Apollo LEM as part of YBCA Space Program Europa exhibition. A short distraction late on Sunday afternoon, before walk and dinner in Chinatown. Tomorrow making the jump back into Eastern Time at home. (Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Mission Street, Dan Francisco, California) 20161030 - Wuhan U of Technology, School of Art and Design
Long preamble to lecture, explaining career and why an ethnic Chinese professional doesn't speak Mandarin. Graduate students now have a limited knowledge of the history of computing, and don't know what a punch card ever was. Speaking on the shift from an industrial economy to a service economy, the issues in China seem similar to other leading industrial nations. Hosted by Susu Nousala, now in her second year of appointment. (Wuhan University of Technology, School of Art and Design, Hubei, China) 20160317 - Why join the navy when you can be a pirate
Enthusiastic students, after Friday course completion, picked a bar with name quoted from Steve Jobs. Actually, it's a cafe that serves alcoholic drinks, mixed juices and smoothies. At 5 p.m., some of the clientele still had laptop computers open, and were tapping away as the sound levels rose. (Why join the navy when you can be a pirate, Annankatu, Helsinki, Finland) 20160219 - Wanlin Art Museum
Modern "flying stone" building in sharp contrast to more traditional architecture on university campus. Large boulder nearby inscribed with recognition of donor of initial art collection, leading to opening of the new museum. Our stroll around the scenic university campus didn't leave enough time to view the much-cited gardens. Terrain is hilly, so retreated to hotel for a short rest after walking for 2 hours. (Wanlin Art Museum, Wuhan University, Wuchang, Wuhan, China) 20160316 - Visual Arts Complex
Ceremony honouring 60th year of the systems sciences conference, which is one full cycle in the Hindu sequence. Conference in Colorado overlaps with conference in India, so we have the world surrounded. (Visual Arts Complex, University of Colorado, Boulder) 20160724 - Victoria College
Has the newel post at the foot of the stairs at Old Vic always been that color? "St. Lawrence Foundry Co. Toronto" cast into post, dates maker 1856 to 1900 on Front Street, when the firm became acquired by Canadian General Electric. Victoria College building architected by W.G. Storm was completed in 1895. Visited building today for annual college used book sale. (Victoria College, University of Toronto, Ontario) 20160924 - Vanha Kauppahalli
Buying salmon in the same way that Finns have since 1889 when the Old Market Hall opened. Also bought little fried vendace at the next stall, to be used in an appetizer. Saturday afternoon sees a lot of tourist visitors, many eating salmon soup facing out from the renovated stalls to become part of the scenery (Kalakauppa E. Eriksson, Vanha Kauppahalli, Eteläranta, Helsinki, Finland) 20161203 - UToronto iSchool
Exploring polydisciplinary interests @ischool_TO @prof_lyons @duffwm @snousala, @daviding, with @jpovaska behind the lens. Lots of coincidental threads that could be tied together from Toronto to Shanghai and Europe. (University of Toronto Faculty of Information, St. George Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20161012 - USF McLaren Center
Opening #puarl2016 @hajoneis Seth Wachter @pbaumgartner theme of The Regenerative City. Multiple sessions on pattern language, more emphasis on urban planning and architecture this year than Purplsoc 2015. (McLaren Conference Centre, University of San Francisco, California) 20161028
