The studio is a quiet oasis at the university, in a city where the disorder and noise of China can be exhausting. Susu has been developing Chinese brush painting technique, and plans to practice over the month that she's resident. Wth the history of the University of Leuven dating back to 1425, and closures during period of French and Netherlander rule, the Catholic University from 1835 was French-speaking, until a split in 1970 changed the institution to a Flemish (Dutch) language institution. Birthday celebration on Christmas Eve led us to choose an Israeli cafe downtown, in a reverse of the Jewish tradition of dining in Chinese restaurants during holiday season. Casual, buzzy atmosphere, with many dishes shared by the family. Table eventually became too small for all of the orders, we had to rearrange platings. Enjoying lunch just off town square, at a classic locale in small town Iowa. Seated at the round table, as depicted in the painting on the wall: a group of locals that used to meet everyday for breakfast, and then again for lunch. Restaurant had been in operation done the 1960s, now on third owner. The walleye serving was mammoth, a great order of fish with battered fries. Illuminated stack of presents of the Old Town Cavalcade of Lights topped by giant white bone continuing the fun of the #ClaudeCormier (2017) Dog Fountain that is unlit for the winter season. The 27 dog statues looking up at the golden bone on top of the fountain have water turned off from November through April. Dumpling soup breakfast a challenge when Mandarin brain hasn't kicked in. Pointing at picture on the wall and another customer having same soup gave intention, but was then tripped up as they asked if I wanted 8, 10 or 12 dumplings. Fresh bowl arrived in less than 10 minutes, then server came back with an extra dumpling that must have gone astray in the pot.
