At public lecture, Professor Yi-Heng CHENG providing color commentary in Mandarin Chinese on specific key concepts presented in English at my public lecture on "Wicked Problems, Affordances, Service Systems: Some perspectives for designing" Methods, reasoning and philosophy are hard enough for English speakers, so checking that students get the drift in their second language. Reminded by Horst Rittel was German, so the term "wicked problems" may lose something in the translation to English. (Sino-Finnish Centre, Tongji University College of Design & Innovation, PR China) 20171124 - Ryerson Student Learning Centre
Entered old building from Victoria Street Lane, not thinking of connection to new Yonge Street entrance. Library is open Sunday into evening, so Ryerson University students must not see summer as a special season. With eduroam, Internet access works the same as at home, so bicycling was just for exercise. (Ryerson Student Learning Centre, Yonge Street, Toronto) 20160612 - Electronic music
Synthpop @AustraTalks @npsToronto @to2015 #panamania pumping bass feels like inside a club, yet the band started on the plaza before the sunset. Haven't heard so much sequencing live since my university days. Entertaining to watch for times when none of three keyboards had hands on keys. Even most drums were electronic. My greying hair was not representative of the audience. Austra is Ryan Wonsiak (keyboards), Maya Potestski (drums), Katie Stelmanis (vocals and keys), Dorian Wolf (bass and keys). (Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto) 20150812 - Heliconian Club

Lining up streetcar rails on Queen Street just west of Leslie Street. Cause of traffic rerouting, but there isn't much pavement right now. (Toronto) 20140612 - USF Kalmanovitz Hall
Context on Max Jacobson #puarl2016 paper on @EdRobertsCampus, saying architect recognised experts are the vision-impaired and wheelchair users of the facility. no pattern language for them. More important than beauty is the collective space welcoming interaction between parties in the facility. Jacobson was a coauthor with Christopher Alexander of 1977 A Pattern Language, then practicising architect with Murray Silverstein for 35 years. Had been teaching at USF as adjunct for past few years. (Kalmanovitz Hall, University of San Francisco, California) 20161030 - Salina, Iowa

Ilan Sandler (2009) "The Vessel", 4 kilometres (the length of Taddle Creek now buried under urban Toronto) of stainless steel rod bent into shape. On summer, the second floor common space at 100 McCaul St. is dark and empty, but the style of the design school shows through in the non-rectilinear arrangement of ceiling lights (Toronto) - Jiangxi Middle Road, Waitan
Dumpling soup breakfast a challenge when Mandarin brain hasn't kicked in. Pointing at picture on the wall and another customer having same soup gave intention, but was then tripped up as they asked if I wanted 8, 10 or 12 dumplings. Fresh bowl arrived in less than 10 minutes, then server came back with an extra dumpling that must have gone astray in the pot. The youth hostel is a few doors north, so servers must be used to handling foreigners. (416 Jiangxi Middle Road, Waitan district, Shanghai, PR China) 20171119 - Heilige Geestcollege
