- Dragon Pearl York Mills
Reservations for 11, lunch choices included turkey, although Asian specialties seemed more popular. Opportunity for grandfather to meet up with family now mostly scattered across Toronto, extended through grandsons marriages. Many trips out to the serving queues, with notable repeat visits to stations for sashimi and for duck. (Dragon Pearl Buffet, York Mills Road, Toronto, Ontario) 20221225 - Automaxx Windsor
Diana waves goodbye to the minivan that we've had since 2007, through four sons learning to drive, with dents and scratches from inexperienced drivers. We transferred our suitcases and travel gear from the MPV into a smaller Mazda5, to continue our journey from Iowa east to Toronto. We removed practically everything from the vehicle destined for the scrap yard. The 4.5 hour drive home taught us the difference in visibility on a shorter car, since we've been driving taller minivans since the early 1990s. (Automaxx Windsor, Fontainbleau neighbourhood, east Windsor, Ontario) 20160511 - The Me, Tongji U College of Design and Innovation
At Tongji University, working to improve Internet access over the hotel like we have in the West. Configuring VPNs on Linux laptops and Android phones. (The Me, College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University, Shanghai, China) 20160314 - Justina M. Barnicke Gallery
Hanging from the wall, #TimWhiten (2014) Hallelujah I is horizontal lilac branches with an umbrella handle suspended into vertical branches, gallery lighting casting shadows down. Part of the The Performance of Shadows exhbition, in the bridging of material and spiritual experiences. Not at this show is (2015) Hallelujah II that looks similar, with a glass cane instead of the umbrella handle. (Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Hart House, University of Toronto) 20231125 - Lower Don River Trail
Bicycling east through the Bala Underpass has southbound path marked as closed to December 2023. Construction machines on top of raised earth downstream foreshadows future Don River Park, wrapped around rail yards and the forthcoming Ontario Line. Enjoying early spring weather on an aimless bicycle route. (Lower Don River Trail, Toronto, Ontario) 20220416 - Riverside neighbourhood
Delivery of new double bed for the new year, ordered online on Boxing Day sale. Had previously tried out store model in person, referred by salesman towards a firm old-style bed like they used to make. Not a fan of the pillow top style that we had brought down from Gravenhurst in 2019, when we were closing out the store. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20230104 - Santa Teresa County Park
Afternoon walk to clear minds from conversation on cognitive systems and service systems. Singing chairs art installation past small gate on trail outside IBM Research Almaden building. Mary Edson, Gary Metcalf, Stuart Kauffman, Susu Nousala, Stephen Kwan, David Ing, Jim Spohrer. (Santa Teresa County Park, San Jose, California) 20161021 - Manulife Centre
Cinema in Yorkville is on upper level of plaza between two modernist residential towers, built in the early 1970s. Building was new when I first came to university in Toronto, and a short walk off campus. Admission price for movie is lower on Tuesdays, and I caught X-Men Apocalypse on a normal sized screen with a handful in the audience. (Cineplex Odeon Varsity, Manulife Centre, Bloor Street West, Toronto) 20160628 - Architecture and Design Gallery
In lower level of building, Asinnajaq + Tiffany Shaw (2022) Nuna is printed fabric draped over maple dowels in a structure like a home with fewer walls, so that the occupant could read a book or watch a screen, and the sunshine and brush of wind aren't blocked. A steel hearth Asinnajaq + Ludovic Boney + Tiffany Shaw (2022) Qulliqu has a neon flame. In the background, larger than life projection of aboriginal women in conversations. (Architecture and Design Gallery, Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landsccape and Design, University of Toronto, Spadina Circle, Toronto, Ontario) 20240110 - St. Michael's Health Centre
Riding elevator up from the 3rd floor Family Practice Unit up to the 8th floor Eye Clinic. Purposefully double booked appointments, as previous ophthalmologist visits have included dilations before exams, this including wait time for droid to take effect. Bonus, as medical student offered flu shot, saving trip to mass inoculations. When wait times are predictable, van be efficient. (St. Michael's Health Centre, 61 Queen Street East, Toronto) 20151020 - Dim Sum King
Summer Systems Conferences Debriefings planned outdoors for Grange Park were driven inside due to rain. Round table was a good configuration for comments and questions, but food arriving and active acoustics were distracting. Inclined to return to online meeting for next month. (Dim Sum King, Dundas Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20220808 - The Power Plant
Installation @ThePowerPlantTO #FranzErhardWalther #CalltoAction fabrics stacked on floor and on wall isn't activated with human interaction as intended, and shown in videos. Works include the red "The New Alphabet, Form G" (1993), "First Work Set" (1963-69) and "Yellow Moulding" (1985). Maybe we could schedule play days with art. (The Power Plant, Harbourfront Centre, Toronto, Ontario) 20160826 - LACMA
Claes Oldenbery (1967) "Giant Pool Balls" on floor, with John McCracken (1967) "Don't Tell Me When to Stop" and Ellsworth Kelly (1972) "Blue Curve III" on the wall behind, in the Ahmanson Building, level 2. Leisurely stroll through galleries with brother, talking while walking. Collection much broader than contemporary art, so focused on primary interest. (Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, California) 20160226 - 228 Peace Memorial Park
Monument to remember the February 28 incident in 1947, where thousands of civilians were killed in the suppression of an anti-government uprising. This structure in Taipei is one of many in the country, designed by architect Cheng Tzu-tsai while in prison. Viewed on a long afternoon trek from the National Taiwan Museum to the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial hall. (228 Peace Memorial Park, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan) 20231013 - Bridge of Uzupis
Entering the Republic of Užupis on International Liars Day, border agents stamped our passports as we crossed the Vilnia River into the bohemian art district The theme for the 25th anniversary of the self-proclaimed republic is a protecting and nurturing angel, whose trumpet proclaims fellowship and faith in openness. We found the wall with the English version of the Užupis Constitution that encourages tolerance in Lithuania, including Man has the right to make mistakes. (Bridge of Užupis. Vilnius, Lithuania) 20230401
