- Automaxx Windsor
Diana waves goodbye to the minivan that we've had since 2007, through four sons learning to drive, with dents and scratches from inexperienced drivers. We transferred our suitcases and travel gear from the MPV into a smaller Mazda5, to continue our journey from Iowa east to Toronto. We removed practically everything from the vehicle destined for the scrap yard. The 4.5 hour drive home taught us the difference in visibility on a shorter car, since we've been driving taller minivans since the early 1990s. (Automaxx Windsor, Fontainbleau neighbourhood, east Windsor, Ontario) 20160511 - Museum of Modern Art
Feeling small beside Gaetano Pesce (1970-1971) Moloch Floor Lamp, (1969) Up 5 Lounge Chair with Up 6 Ottoman, both made in Italy. Museum feels much larger than last visit years ago, I've lost my family walking around. Visitors to the galleries fully international. (Museum of Modern Art, 53rd Street, New York, NY) 20220903 - St. Michael's Health Centre
Riding elevator up from the 3rd floor Family Practice Unit up to the 8th floor Eye Clinic. Purposefully double booked appointments, as previous ophthalmologist visits have included dilations before exams, this including wait time for droid to take effect. Bonus, as medical student offered flu shot, saving trip to mass inoculations. When wait times are predictable, van be efficient. (St. Michael's Health Centre, 61 Queen Street East, Toronto) 20151020 - Chacapuri Akropolis
Georgian cuisine for research team converging in Kaunas from Spain, USA, France, Canada and Switzerland, especially enjoying Khachapuri cheese bread and Khinkali dumpling stuffed with mushrooms and tarragon. Top-of-mind were travel tribulations rerouting around transportation strike in Germany. Experienced contemporary Lithuania on the third floor or a large shopping, a short walk south from St. Michael the Archangel Church. (Chacapuri, Akropolis Shopping Mall, Kaunas, Lithuania) 20230327 - The Me, Tongji U College of Design and Innovation
At Tongji University, working to improve Internet access over the hotel like we have in the West. Configuring VPNs on Linux laptops and Android phones. (The Me, College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University, Shanghai, China) 20160314 - Taiwan Design Museum
Exhibiton on Designs For The Next 100 Years by design firm NOSIGNER looks into solving ecological problems. Follows the approach of Evolutional Creativity from Eisuke Tachikawa of mutation and selection in biological evolution to create astounding beauty and function. Award-winning book written in Japanese was translated into Chinese and published in Taiwan. (Taiwan Design Museum, Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, Xinyi District, Taipei City, Taiwan) 20231015 - Ravintola Jing Cheng
Chinese cuisine executed well, but recipe lacking in green vegetables may be preferred by Nordic clientele. Venue convenient to the apartment where I'm staying, but local foods and cooking by my own hands are superior. Met with once-removed acquaintance, exchange perspectives on dual careers in academia and commercial practice. (Kiinalainen Ravintola Jing Cheng, Töölö, Helsinki, Finland) 20160211 - Manulife Centre
Cinema in Yorkville is on upper level of plaza between two modernist residential towers, built in the early 1970s. Building was new when I first came to university in Toronto, and a short walk off campus. Admission price for movie is lower on Tuesdays, and I caught X-Men Apocalypse on a normal sized screen with a handful in the audience. (Cineplex Odeon Varsity, Manulife Centre, Bloor Street West, Toronto) 20160628 - Lower Don Trail
In progress Art Relay @PanAmPath A Love Letter to the Great Lakes under ramp from Don Valley Parkway southbound to Gardiner Expressway westbound. Official photo opportunity still two days away, at which point the artists should get more rest beyond the hammock. Signs for bicyclists to dismount or go slow through the site, ask that the work team be left alone so that they can make a crazy deadline. (Lower Don Trail, Toronto, Ontario) 20160622 - Why join the navy when you can be a pirate
Enthusiastic students, after Friday course completion, picked a bar with name quoted from Steve Jobs. Actually, it's a cafe that serves alcoholic drinks, mixed juices and smoothies. At 5 p.m., some of the clientele still had laptop computers open, and were tapping away as the sound levels rose. (Why join the navy when you can be a pirate, Annankatu, Helsinki, Finland) 20160219 - The Power Plant
Installation @ThePowerPlantTO #FranzErhardWalther #CalltoAction fabrics stacked on floor and on wall isn't activated with human interaction as intended, and shown in videos. Works include the red "The New Alphabet, Form G" (1993), "First Work Set" (1963-69) and "Yellow Moulding" (1985). Maybe we could schedule play days with art. (The Power Plant, Harbourfront Centre, Toronto, Ontario) 20160826 - Església del Sagrat Cor + Convent de les Mínimes
Arrived too late for doors to be open for the 6:30pm service, at the Church of the Sacred Heart, inaugurated in 1894. Alongside the Convent of the Minimes, the female branch of the congregation founded by San Francisco de Paula in the 1500s was chartered by Sister Filomena Ferrer Galzeran in her home town of Mora d'Ebre. While the tomb of Sister Filomena was destroyed in 1936, her cause for beatification was introduced on 1891, leading to Pope Leo XIII declaring her venerable in 1897, and Pope John Paul II approving her decree as a saint in 1989. (Església del Sagrat Cor + Convent de les Mínimes, Plaça de la Venerable Sor Filomena Ferrer, Móra d'Ebre, Tarragona, Spain) 20221007 - Kaunas Technological University, School of Economics and Business
Convened @ktuin4act researchers for rapid collective authoring of book on Industry 5.0 edited by @snousala + @garysmetcalf. Short deadline for completion within 2023 focuses on the present, without the literature review and distractions of the recent pandemic years. Aiming for a book that is not a series of academic articles, but instead chapters that a technical-managerial audience might want to read. (Kaunas Technological University, School of Economics and Business, Lithuania) 20230329 - Canadian National Exhibition grounds
Shrine Peace Memorial presented in 1930 to Canada by Shriners, with 1958 surrounding fountain and gardens created by Toronto Parks Department. Faces Lake Shore Boulevard, southeast of the Bandshell and southwest of the Better Living Centre. I've been going to the CNE since the 1960s, and this fountain was never on the route between sights. The Shell Tower is in the background. CNE is only really active in the last 2 weeks of August. (Shrine Peace Memorial, Canadian National Exhibition grounds, Toronto, Ontario) 20160707 - USF Cowell Hall
Presented paper at #puarl2016 conference in one of four parallel tracks. Audience ranged from newcomers to the body of work, through to a coauthor with Christopher Alexander of the original 1971 A Pattern Language book. About 100 attendees at this conference. USF is still lively on a Saturday with singing and music competing in the main room through a thin room partition wall. (Cowell Hall, University of San Francisco, California) 20161029
