- Roberta's Bushwick
Dinner after a long day with family plans shifting, and then adjustments made en route. NYC weekend and then cruise to Bermuda was planned months ago, but I'll be returning home on Monday before everyone else ships out. New York looks a little different since my last visit 7 years ago, but the energy persists. (Roberta's Bushwick, Moore Street, Brooklyn, New York) 20220902 - Roberta's Bushwick
Checking quality of pizza fresh out of the oven, experiencing the Bushwick neighbourhood. Will just have a weekend in New York with 2 of our sons, before moving on. The urban vibe is energetic, but it's getting harder for the elders to hear, over the music. (Roberta's Bushwick, Moore Street, Brooklyn, NY) 20220902 - Robert Koenig, "Odyssey"
Forty male and female characters carved out of lime trees from the Carpinthian Mountains on southeast Poland. Part of the Polish Season organized by the University of Hull Faculty of Arts and Social Science, placed on a plaza in the central campus. Unfortunate barricade around the installation, presumably to deter damaged, but the fences are distracting. (U. Hull, UK) 20121119 140459 - Robarts Library
South-facing view of city, as I'm reading history of science during a slow holiday weekend. "In 1982, [Eric Trist] wanted to create at York University a Centre for Action Learning but faced resistance from the University Senate". Richard Trahair, (2017) "Behavior, Technology, and Organizational Development: Eric Trist and the Tavistock Institute" p. 289. (Robarts Library, 11th floor, University of Toronto). 20180805 - Robarts Library
Eleventh floor stacks, with triangular window bays protruding out facing Sussex Street. My alumnus card still gives me access to the stacks to old books, including one older than my attending university. Biked cross town, got caught in torrential downpour in the last five minutes, so entered the building dripping water. (Roberts Library 11th floor, University of Toronto, St. George Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20160605. - RMIT VN Recreational Centre
Touring the Saigon South campus of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, encountered cheerleading men elevating each flyer up and then transitioning to prone position. University is modern and compact in 2 buildings, with covered walkways to student centre and athletic facilities furher on. Received permission from faculty member to tour the campus, admission onsite has been tightened since the pandemic attracted non-academics and crowded out students. (RMIT VN Recreational Centre, Tân Hưng, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) 20231006 - Riverside Park, Muscatine, Iowa
The Pearl Button riverboat, docked on the west side of the Mississippi River. Area famous for shells made into buttons, in the era before synthetic materials became popular. Brief rest stop before leaving the state. (Riverside Park, Muscatine, Iowa) 20150429 - Riverside neighbourhood
New natural gas furnace and heat pump installed, 4 days after technician found a cracked block on the old one. Attached red tag mean fuel shutoff for 4 days, cool inside as outside temperature dipped to freezing at night. Old furnace was 20 years old on an expected 15 year life, we switched out air conditioner in year 10 of a 13-year life because cooling and heating are now integrated as a system. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20231113 - Riverside neighbourhood
Ready for greet visitors calling trick-or-treat. Not yet dark, but sometimes parents bring the really young while it's still daylight. Weather is clear, temperature should still be above freezing for the evening. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20231031 - Riverside neighbourhood
Mobile bike mechanic rolled up to our garage on the back laneway with a trailer carrying a stackable toolbox, collapsed bike stand and some supplies. Requested tuneups for the newer fun Miyata and the older Raleigh beater, both with drivetrain issues. The Miyata is missing one of 6 speeds due to a plastic tooth broken in the shifter, the Raleigh has a chain stretched so far that a replacement might be considered next year. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20230811 - Riverside neighbourhood
Delivery of new double bed for the new year, ordered online on Boxing Day sale. Had previously tried out store model in person, referred by salesman towards a firm old-style bed like they used to make. Not a fan of the pillow top style that we had brought down from Gravenhurst in 2019, when we were closing out the store. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20230104 - Riverside neighbourhood
Opening Christmas stockings on December 24, as Christmas Day gets busy with in-law commitments scheduling. New experience for Vietnamese nationals on diasporic Canadian protocols around holidays. Lineup on the stairs has been an ritual for our sons since they were young. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20221224 - Riverside neighbourhood
Daughter-in-law and sister on first visit to Toronto, holiday season meant all of our sons are in town. Still recovering from delayed flights from Vancouver, plus jet lag. House decorated for Christmas holidays, more family events ahead. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20221224 - Riverside neighbourhood
Holiday plans disrupted by flight delays from Vancouver. Drove to Pearson for pickups, 1:00 a.m. arrival came home at 5:00 a.m. after waiting for luggage was fruitless; 3:00 a.m. arrival is still at airport at 1:00 p.m. to file claim for lost luggage. Chinese beef stew for Dec. 23 dinner has become Dec. 24 lunch, if we can coordinate time zone shifts. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20221224 - Riverside neighbourhood
Arborists @TOtrees outside my window this morning, sawing at the linden tree in our front yard. Pruner in the articulated boom lift (cherry picker) with shears above, collector of branches on the ground, below. The sapling was owned by the city when we moved in so many decades ago, and has been professionally maintained mostly without our attention. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20220331
