ISSS 2016 Boulder plenary - Ramybės Park (Old Cemetery)
Monument We Died for the Fatherland first unveiled by the first president of Lithuania in 1930, demolished in 1956-1956 by Soviets, reconstructed by #RobertasAntinis in 1994, after restoration the country's independence in 1990. Noticed enclosed candles in the front that won't blow out with the wind. The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 led to the Soviets converting the cemetery established in 1847 into a park, after giving families a few months to rebury their relatives. (Ramybės Park (Old Cemetery)), Kaunas, Lithuania) 20230327 - Ralph Thornton Centre

Public consultation on Unilever Precinct redevelopment, our home is might in the middle of it! Area of 25 hectares compared to London Canary Wharf 29 hectares, and New York City Hudson Yards 11 hectares. We're 3 short blocks over from the proposed SmartTrack/GO-RER station, and heard that committee approved the TTC relief line alignment up Carlaw Avenue, this morning. A huge leap forward from the neighbourhood we joined in 1988. (Ralph Thornton Centre, Queen Street East, Riverside district, Toronto, Ontario 20170516 - Rainy Vancouver waypoint

(Vancouver International Airport, British Columbia) 20151217 - Rainbow Cinema Market Square
Foyer mural by Fred Harrison inside cinema depicts the hustle of the St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood. Enjoyed Snowden movie, an appreciation of the character in the intelligence community. Kosso Eloul (1978) Innercity Gate sculpture welds three black stainless steel rectangular boxes in a precarious balance. Straight lines show influences of artist's studies with Frank Lloyd Wright. Outside a wing of Toronto General Hospital, not on a medical visit, just bicycle tourism. (R. Fraser Elliott Building, Elizabeth Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20210425 - Queue for platform 9-3/4

Discovered stack of order blanks for our family's restaurant in the 1950s (or 1960s). If Queen Victoria (reign 1837-1901) looked over her shoulder, she would see J. Sandfield Macdonald (first premier of Ontario, 1867-1864). Government offices are closed on the public holiday, visitors can enjoy the green space on bright summer day. City has started to open up from pandemic shutdown, optimistic for more social time. (Queen's Park, Wellesley Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20210701 - Queen's Park
Privileged to live in a city where children can run free in a public park, and parents are trusting, without regard to their ethnicity or socio-economic status. The King Edward VII Equestrian Statue was installed in 1969 more for the horse, than for the monarch on horseback. Any traces of defacement by protesters are gone, a brief moment in the larger context of time. (Queen's Park, Toronto, Ontario) 20200721 - Queen Street Viaduct
Sunset arriving earlier, after the shift back to Standard Time. Looking westward along Queen Street East, the lit windows of bank towers on Bay Street and the CN Tower are familiar orientation points. Temperature dipped, so first day for winter wear for bicycling. (Queen Street Viaduct, Toronto, Ontario) 20201103 - Queen Street Viaduct
Dusk on Christmas Eve, biking westward to see how much the city is shutting down for the holidays. Unusually warm for December, prospects for snow anytime soon seem far away. (Queen Street Viaduct, Riverside, Toronto, Ontario) 20151224 - Queen Street East at Logan Avenue
Overhead wires have been at this city intersection since the 1880s, presumable replaced many times over. Second truck parked across the street was detaching cables, the poles further east have neater braids. This tough urban streetscape might be improved by burying underground, but one block south used to be a marsh, suggesting geological as well as economic practicalities.
