- Niagara Falls from the Rainbow Bridge
On a summer Friday morning, the Rainbow Bridge border crossing was the quickest, not to mention most scenic, way into the U.S. DY driving, so passenger shot out window while moving - Riverside neighbourhood
Post-pandemic, it takes my sister and brother-in-law to come in from Houston, to bring my father down from Scarborough for a visit. It's been years since our sons used to see their grandfather every month for dim sum. Entertaining at home with takeout food allows more time for conversation, when we're all on workday schedules. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20211013 - Trace
Intense family drama @kJeffHo @FactoryToronto portrays 3 generations, one actor, two pianos in Trace. Great-grandmother, mother and son wrestle with conflict and duty, from wartime Canton to Hong Kong and Toronto immigration. Moments of humour in the personalities. The Cantonese-accented English takes me back a few decades, the mainlanders sound different now. (Trace, Factory Theatre, Bathurst Street, Toronto, Ontario) 2017114 - Mak Deli
Bosnian meat burek, plus combo of cevapi grilled minced meat and sudjukice smoked veal sausage on lepinje flat bread, made to order. Casual cafe at back of eastern European market, given table service with knife, fork, napkin and water glasses. Food makes sense geographically, as Bosnia Herzegovina is south of Austria and Hungary (grilled meat) and north of Greece (bread deeper than pita). Service in a Canadian style. (Mak European Deli, Lawrence Avenue East, Scarborough, Ontario) 20160408 - Helsinki Airport T1
Train from city centre arrived at 12:49pm downstairs for 2:00pm departure. Star Alliance Gold check-in counter moved to far side of economy line, so slight stress to find right place. Worth maintaining frequent flyer status to speed through airport. Built up sweat dragging 2 checked bags plus carry-on through Helsinki snow. (Helsinki Airport, Vantaa, Finland) 20160220 - Terminal 1 Christmas tree
December not yet cold, so holiday cue is a reminder of family times to come at end of month. Departing on flight to California, so thoughts of snowflakes even farther away. (Toronto Pearson Airport Terminal 1, U.S. gates, Toronto, Ontario) 20151208 - Victoria University Quad
Quintet @AmandaTosoff piano @torontojazzfest featuring @ecbarlow vocals, with @allisonaumusic sax, @Raj_maha bass, @Morjazzum drums. Working their way across Canadian jazz festivals, Amanda as leader, having spent 7 years backing Emilie-Claire. Album released in January 2021, this has been first opportunity to tour. (Victoria College Quadrangle, University of Toronto) 20220703 - Pizzeria Via Mercanti
Massive blue-tiled wood-fired oven with pizza spatula follows traditional Italian methods in the branch located in Little India. Diningroom has lots of space at lunchtime, as a good place for a relaxed business discussion. On diets, we split a pizza and a salad. (Pizzeria Via Mercanti, Gerrard Street East, Little India, Toronto) 20170511 - 156 Booth Ave.
Across our street, two alarm fire at 3:30 a.m. called out 12 trucks and 45 firefighters. This morning, the exit out the front of our house was blocked as a crime scene. One neighbour has an exterior video camera capturing intruders on the scene in the night. Fire trucks are now gone, yellow police tape is around that property. Houses to the north and south both damaged. (156 Booth Avenue, Riverside district, Toronto, Ontario) 20170627 - Vantaa Design Gallery
An invitation to enjoy Finnish design at Helsinki Vantaa Airport leads to an installation of chairs designed by Finns, with biographies on display. Directions to "wear hearing protectors" a typically playful Finnish style, enabling greater enjoyment of design in "seizing the moment" (Vantaa) 20120411 1309 - Booth Avenue
Lightning struck tree, three fire trucks for house south of us. Hose filled briefly to extinguish for in tall tree. Electrical power to the block is off, wondering if transformer is impacted. Heavy rain is subsiding. (Booth Avenue, Riverside district, Toronto, Ontario) 20170804 - Mountain Equipment Co-op
Discovered most bike lights @Mec_Toronto now changed to USB internal recharging. Selected MEC Quattro white LED light. Replacing old Planet Bike unit with dead bulbs, could have been at least 5 years old. Have to prepare for shorter days. (Mountain Equipment Co-op, King Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20160919 - LHR T2 Concourse
Check-in concourse to Heathrow Terminal 2 is spacious, which means super-human scale from Piccadilly Underground through security. Air Canada gates still in Terminal 3, 15 minute walk further. - Yonge-Dundas Square
Labour Day early evening, no formal events, but buskers draw their own audience. Crowds dissipated a few minutes later, with another performer announcing the next show. Stores mostly closed, many restaurants dark in celebration of labour. (Yonge-Dundas Square, Toronto) 20150907 - Center for Global Enterprise
Interview of Sam Palmisano and Chris Caine by David Ing, Global Scholar Program, as reward for perfect score on a quiz on the "Re-Think: A Path the Future" book.
