- Pigeon Point Light Station
Maybe a whale blowing offshore. Light station closed since 2001. (Pigeon Point Light Station, Pescadero, California) 20170321 - DI_20161012 140944 CosmicTreats blueberrycheesecake
- Rainy Vancouver waypoint
Direct SanFran-Toronto flight cancelled, so earlier flight via Vancouver makes up some time. Luggage missing, should eventually be delivered to house. Domestic security inspected zhong rice dumpling wrapped in banana leaves, recognised by ethnic Chinese screener. (Vancouver International Airport, British Columbia) 20151217 - Place Dumon
Cutting lotte zeeduivel (angler monkfish) for steamboat hotpot dinner later. Fish is so ugly, sellers display without head, then remove filaments and membranes for home cooking. Firm flesh, won't dissolve in soup. Humbled by Belgian market offering pheasant, hare, horsemeat, spooning out steak tartare into takeout containers. Variety back home is so much smaller. (Marché de Stockel, Place Dumon, Woluwé-Saint-Pierre, Belgium) 20161126 - Icicle lights above fireplace
Post-Thanksgiving decoration by child looking forward to next holiday season. Fireplace is more than decorative, warming up the house, logs added every three hours. We unplugged the Christmas tree set up at one side, as blinking lights are too much in the dim room. (Fairfield, Iowa) 20151129 - Nathan Phillips Square
Universal Breaking League on the Pond Stage for Battle for the North two-on-two competition, as part of Canada Days celebration. Big screen alternating with musical acts on the Main Stage. Large crowds out for Sunday evening, statutory observance will be on Monday. (Nathan Phillips Square, Bay Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20170702 - Kariniemi Park
Pikku-Vesijärvi pond is famous for largest musical fountains in the Nordics, but after dark, not on a fall Sunday afternoon. Friend has moved to small town Lahti, commuting 3 days a week to Helsinki, enjoying the quiet after 5 years in busy London. Re-establishing previous university ties to share intelligence on how times have changed (Kariniemi Park, Lahti, Finland) 20151004 - Koenji High
Tear down for next band to start within 10 minutes, in Total Feedback show featuring shoegazing style. Saw four of six 30-minute sets. Most enjoyed edy two arc band, also saw スプール spool, Al Van She's Coming and Magic Love in basement hall with high ceilings. Upstairs, a quieter duo in the lounge. Reminded of the power of well-engineered live music, a stark contrast to the earbud generation. (Koenji High, Suganami ward, Tokyo, Japan) 20170326 - @TorontoJazzFestival opener
Tara Davidson sax, @DanielRFortin bass, @ErnestoCervini drums @TorontoLibrary North York concourse for early evening set. Band has known each other more than a decade. Played a lot of new original songs, yet to be recorded, including "31 Days", which is how long it took Tara to write it last year. (North York Central Library) 20150615 - Koffler Gallery
Show+tell @KofflerArts Kimberly Rose, Mona Filip, Sameer Farooq, Jared Stanley, Lisa Ellis on Objects of Affection panel. Response to Esther Shalev-Gerz (2016) The Gold Room exhibition, Mona brought an artifact for interpretation. Museum conservator Lisa spoke of metal composition, poet Jared admired curved edge, visual artist Sameer wondered about users sociopolitically, shaman Kimberly saw it as one in a set of 80-year old culinary utensils. It's a sieve that Mona's great-grandfather tinsmith made that now is a kitchen ornament. (Koffler Gallery, Artscape Youngplace, Toronto, Ontario) 20180603 - Stubbs Bar-B-Q, Austin, TX
Young Tongue, opening act on a quiet Wednesday night in the Red River district, north of 6th Street. We arrived in Austin a few hours ago, having been waylaid by a missed connection. (Austin, Texas) 20141303 - Jetway B24 at the end of the OHare universe
Arrival on commuter plan from Cedar Rapids, to discover gate at very end of airport, by fences with access road into terminals just on the other side. Fortunately, connection scheduled of 2 hours, and flight to Toronto leaves from Gate B14. (Chicago) 20140501 - McCarran Airport gates
Immediately on arrival as Las Vegas Airport, there are slot machines nearby. Casinos don't like cameras on their floors, but the attendants at the airport don't seem to care (Las Vegas, NV) 20120429 1136 - Seabus delay
Minor delay for Seabus southbound, as tugboat pulls crane past ferry dock. Not exactly the traffic congestion that I experience on the commute back home. (Vancouver, BC) 20120507 1216 - Fabian's Cafe
Tidy German pastry shop serving wiener schnitzel and crepes for lunch, an out-of-the-way meeting place with friends further out on the east end. European style in a strip plaza with many South Asian varieties nearby, on the major suburban street. (Fabian's Cafe, Markham Road, Scarborough, Ontario) 20170613
