First workshop for Open Häme project since its official funding, discussing plans for open data activities in the region. Meeting conducted mostly in Finnish, my presentation a theoretical break in English. (HAMK UAS Visamäki C-Building, Hämeenlinna, Finland) 20170810 - Village of Yorkville Park
Words Quartet @AmandaTosoff @TorontoJazzFest staged between 700 ton Muskoka granite outcrop and rain curtain. This project led by pianist who usually performs instrumentals, female voice enriches show with harmonic counterpoint. Compact venue is a welcome change from sprawling public plaza downtown. (Village of Yorkville Park, Cumberland Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20170624 - Victoria College Chapel
Used book sale fills the pews, pipe organ not in use late on Saturday afternoon. Inventory seems depleted halfway through the event days, volunteers said the first day was jammed with people. Minor purchase of two paperbacks, we have cartons of our own castoffs ready for donation. (Victoria College Chapel, Charles Street West, University of Toronto, Ontario) 20170923 - Vicky Keith Point
Long route to Toronto Harbour Lighthouse, southmost tip of Tommy Thompson Park via the endikement road on the lakeward side of headland by bicycle, since the bridge on the more direct path is out. Loop road is ringed by rubble. some stacked in artistic ways by other visitors. CN Tower and bank towers of downtown Toronto across the water. (Toronto Harbour Lighthouse, Vicky Keith Point, Tommy Thompson Park, Toronto, Ontario) 20170608 - Vesuvio Cafe
Need more practice on the art of wasting time and chilling. Walked around Chinatown and saw the Chinese Historical Society, now tired. Headed out into North Beach, so joining the Beat generation seemed natural. Ginger beer and green tea available. (Vesuvio Cafe, Columbus Avenue, North Beach, San Francisco, California) 20170319 - Verkkokauppa
Sunday shopping in busy store, slow moves from waiting for salesperson, to roaming store with pager until merchandise brought upstairs, to long check out line. Friend amused as I squeezed in some extra questions of clerk out of order, as a rudeness excusable to foreigners but not locals. Computer parts to prepare laptop for another year behind the Chinese firewall. (Verkkokauppa, Tyynenmerenkatu, Helsinki, Finland) 20170813 - Verkatehdas
Elomessut weekend fair for Kanta-Häme region, at the civic centre. Live performances, and kiosk tents from local associations and businesses. Wide cross section of local residents in a small town by the river. (Verkatehdas, Hämeenlinna, Finland) 20170812 - Veggie Garden
Vegan goose, beef, pork, gobi cauliflower and potato pancake excellently prepared and served at a strip mall Chinese restaurant. Discussed the shift from Ontario to Silicon Valley, enjoying the easy lifestyle of American suburban living. (Veggie Garden, El Camino Real, Mountain View, California) 20170316 - Vari Centre
Lightning talks at GTALUG Greater Toronto Area Linux User Group are being recorded on video. First time attending, I offered to talk for 5 minutes on Desktop Environments, followed by 5 minutes for questions. Others are technically deeper. Linux isn't my full time job, but I've spent the past 10 years of my life using it. (George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre, Ryerson University, Church Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20170711 - Vantaa Gate 22
Mobile installation of white sheets above an airport gate moves slowly with the air flows higher in the terminal. Walked from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 in hopes of viewing the advertised art installations at Gate 31, but aborted that plan when the long linear nature of the terminal emperiled catching my departure from Gate 15. There used to be an art installation in Terminal 1, now since replaced by a boring row of carrals for working. (Helsinki Airport, Vantaa, Finland) 20170817 - Vancouver Art Gallery
Neil Campbell (1992/2017) East, a site-specific wall painting dominates visitors walking by. Tuesday night visit unfortunately saw many galleries closed as exhibitions are changing, for an opening later in the week. (Vancouver Art Gallery, Hornby Street, Vancouver, BC) 20171025 - UToronto iSchool
Digital @gamespacenl @ischool_TO Platformization of Cultural Production research on 3 pillars of business studies, political economy and platform studies. Multisided markets, with gaps for deeper inquiry into economics, governance and infrastructure. Research in progress, students in classes at Scarborough College partially immersed in ongoing knowledge development. (Faculty of Information iSchool, St. George Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20171003 - Ueno Park
Bloom of Cherry Blossoms attracts many Japanese to Ueno Park. so space is measured off with tarpaulins underneath, to allow visiting groups to socialize, picnic (and drink alcohol). Tradition of removing shoes is preserved even outdoors. Large garbage bins have been placed nearby, with signs to reduce confusion about sorting. (Ueno Park, Taito, Tokyo, Japan) 20170325 - UBC University Blvd
Rain or shine rail jam @UbcSkiAndBoard club trucked in snow on a cool fall day. Student climbed to top of bales of hay, and then slid downhill to grind a rail skateboard style. Discovered this was the 10th annual event, a wild spectacle that eastern Canadians find bizarre. Another change in UBC since I studies here in the 1980s. (University Blvd., University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC) 20171027 - Twin Anchors
Two full racks of ribs split amongst four mouths, orders placed just 10 minutes before kitchen closed as after-theatre dinner. Historic restaurant served fall-off-the-bone pork. Photographs on the wall include Frank Sinatra as a patron, and The Dark Night as a movie venue. (Twin Anchors Restaurant, North Sedgwick Street, Chicago, Illinois) 20170507
