- Anshansicun
Whimsically painted building in residential area, park directly south and exercise walkways just to the west. Exploring the neighbourhoods on foot reveals some beautiful enclaves away from the main thoroughfares and generic apartment towers. (Sujiatun Road at Fuxin Road, Anshansicun, Shanghai, PR China) 20171123 - Antón Martín Market
Hardly the first, but maybe one of the brighter and attractive displays of jamon iberico hanging from racks to attract customers. I'm unlikely to make a meal of pork, since I'm a vegan, but I enjoy the vibe of thriving public markets. Located in a less-touristy local, this public market seemed to offer a lot of Japanese food options. (Antón Martín Market, Calle de Santa Isabel, Madrid, Spain) 20220930 - Antwerp Chinatown gate
Day trip results in finding Chinatown gate in Antwerp, with Central Station just a little south beyond. Stone lions at the ends of block both north and south on Van Wesenbekestraat. At 6:30 p.m. on a Thursday night, surprised that the majority of restaurants are closed, as are Chinese supermarkets. Found a reasonably priced noodle shop that just opened a month ago, so super-clean with earnest service. Wending way back through through diamond district, all storefronts were closed up securiely for the evening. We arrived at station two minutes before return train to Brussels scheduled to leave, so no waiting time. (Chinatown and Central Train Station, Antwerp, Belgium) 20150924 - Appel Salon
Main day of @CoopsCanada #platformcoop conference, with presentations from both emerging and established organizations. Knowledge base is nascent on digital platforms, multi-stakeholder coops seem complicated. Typing during day and posting blogs online at night is tiring. (Bram & Bluma Appel Salon, Toronto Public Library) 20170909 - Approaching Vancouver via Seabus
Business travel luxury to return from North Vancouver via Seabus. Much faster than riding in car north over Lions Gate Bridge, and then west through construction on Marine Drive. (Vancouver, BC) 20110913 1525 - Arabiakeskus
Red berries on trees, approaching the Hämeentie Factory Block of the Arabia district, known for its long history in design. Are those rowan (mountain ash) trees? Attended the "Creating the Mindset of Sustainable Societies" class, one of the core courses in the Master's Programme in Creative Sustainability at Aalto University. Caught afternoon student presentations on final day of class. Challenged to be critical when prior context of assignments wasn't fully explained. Will see the students two more days this week. (Arabiakeskus, Helsinki, Finland) 20151006 - Architecture and Design Gallery
In lower level of building, Asinnajaq + Tiffany Shaw (2022) Nuna is printed fabric draped over maple dowels in a structure like a home with fewer walls, so that the occupant could read a book or watch a screen, and the sunshine and brush of wind aren't blocked. A steel hearth Asinnajaq + Ludovic Boney + Tiffany Shaw (2022) Qulliqu has a neon flame. In the background, larger than life projection of aboriginal women in conversations. (Architecture and Design Gallery, Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landsccape and Design, University of Toronto, Spadina Circle, Toronto, Ontario) 20240110 - Arena Mexico
Lucha libre tag team wrestling with aerial acrobatic moves thrilling the audience. We arrived after the show had started, and were pursued by scalpers up to the ticket window. Not the usual style of family excursion for us, we noticed other parents with young children donning the máscaras (masks) of their heroes. (Arena Mexico, Colonia Doctores, Mexico City) 20191220 - Argiro Student Center queue
Vegetarian lunch was a good excuse to visit the Maharishi School of Management, but the lineup to enter the cafeteria servery was too long. We ran up the exit staircase to peek into one dining hall, where finding a table for a group of four would have been a challenge. Lots of people moving around with food on trays. Parking lots outside were full. With the menu of the day feature Chinese sweet and sour tofu, we opted for the buffet at Pizza Ranch in town (and ate too much, there). (Argiro Student Center, Maharishi School of Management, Fairfield, Iowa) 20150729 - Armenian lunch
Zataar, beef manakeesh, kishek with sujuk, moutabbal, tabbouleh, then a half order of mixed BBQ platter. Extraordinary flavour when the food arrived hot to the table, declining as it cooled in the approaching winter. Celebration of DY's birthday deferred to weekend when family could be together. (Paramount Fine Foods, Yonge Street' Toronto) 20151206 - ARN T5 Pier F
Climate Portal @Arlanda airport Stockholm gives three choices of weather simulators: Go Hot, Go Big (cities) or Go Cold. I chose to Go Cold, and got a large screen blast of downhill skiing. Interesting promotion of travel, while reminding visitors of the variety of weather choices we implicitly make. (Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Terminal 5, Pier F) 20150930 - ArsElectronica BitFlow
Installation by Julius Popp, associated with myth of Ariadne's thread in which chaos is vanquished by order. First exhibited in 2008, now at @ArsElectronica. (Linz, Austria) 20120418 1448 - ArsElectronica FabLab
3D stylus, screen and visors still requires talent, to design to make in Fab Lab at Ars Electronica. Polygons have to be closed so that 3D printers will work. (Linz, Austria) 20120417 1604 - Arsenal Contemporary Art
Reflective fabric 40 metres long, stitched by @MataAhoCollective (2014) Kaokao #1, part of @TorontoBiennial. Pieced together by Maori artists, in a tukutuku chevron design used both as a military symbol and birthing maps. Size shown in relation to another visitor, innocently reading the description card for the work. (Arsenal Contempotary Gallery, Ernest Avenue, Junction Triangle, Toronto, Ontario) 20220507 - Art at Denver Airport A gates
Dual Meridian by David Griggs overhead in atrium by trains from Terminal A. Also heard Train Call song by Jim Green as doors were about to close, a welcome alternative to the usual boring warning tones. (Denver) 20131128 1041
