- Enoshima Iwata Caves on Sagami Bay
Traversed Enoshima Island from north side to south coast for Iwata Caves. Carried candles inside first cave to view Shinto and Buddhist statues. Also walked rocky shoreline along Sagami Bay, talking with a fisherman who didn't share a language. Morning train was quick, as rapid express during rush hour sped way to Ofuna for the Shonan suspended monorail. (Enoshima, Japan) 20140219 1048 - AC001 Toronto Tokyo
Two aisle seats booked, lucky with middle seat unclaimed, to give a little more room for napping on the 12-hour flight from Toronto Pearson to Tokyo Narita. Air Canada flight arrived early, had to wait 30 minutes for Narita Express train as just missed the one prior. Trip from airport to hotel completely in daylight, snow is practically all gone after heavy weekend accumulation. (Toronto-Tokyo) 20140217 1146 - Toronto Pearson Bamboo City

Reframing service systems methods as project-portfolio conversations: Appreciating the shift from structured methods to agile systems development - Herbs Post Decoction
Spent Chinese herbs after boiling 4 cups of water down to 1 cup of decoction inside the electric Chinese medicine cooker. Trying to resolve excess heat (yang, fire) and dry skin with leaves, bark and roots prescribed by Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner. House is now full of unpleasant herb scents, I drank the black liquid as rapidly as possible to minimize offending the taste buds (Toronto) 20131230 1415 - Seven bags of herbs from Siang Ye Tang
Traditional Chinese Medicine prescribed 7 bags of herbs, to be boiled and drunken over the next 7 days. Symptoms of heat, dryness, lower mental acuity. Unusual directions to come back next week for more herbs, as my head has been hot over the past month. Decoction to be prepared under range hood, but house will smell Chinese for a while (Chinatown East, Toronto) 20131229 1604 - Ryerson Rink, Boxing Day 2013
Casual hockey playing on rink at Gould and Victoria Streets doesn't follow rules of university, but who would be there to enforce on a public holiday? Shoppers on nearby Yonge Street might see skaters as scenery. (Toronto) 20131226 1649 - Dressed for skiing at Mount St Louis Moonstone
Restarted tradition of skiing on my birthday, sons ready to ensure survival. Two on snowboards, two on ski blades, me on conventional skis. Lift lines are short on Dec. 24. (Coldwater, Ontario) 20131224 13:07 - The Monocoque, Moline Airport
Retired aircraft hanging from airport terminal ceiling - Convening at Pella Town Square
Coming from Fairfield, Des Moines, Chicago, Michigan and Toronto, the town of Pella was chosen as the venue for lunch. We've met online, but not in person. The Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, the holiday spirit was heightened by tourist in horse-drawn carriages around the square (Pella, Iowa) 20131130 [photo by Emerson Brown] - SFO Terrminal 3 art installation
Japanese Toys! From Kokeshi to Kaiju display at San Francisco Airport, between the speedwalks to T3 departures. Discovered that UA720 at 5:44 a.m. PT must be the first flight out for the day, as under-capacity security personal said I was the third person checked that morning, around 4:15 a.m. (San Francisco Airport) 20131129 0429 - Art at Denver Airport A gates
Dual Meridian by David Griggs overhead in atrium by trains from Terminal A. Also heard Train Call song by Jim Green as doors were about to close, a welcome alternative to the usual boring warning tones. (Denver) 20131128 1041 - Chinese postage stamps of Dr. David Lam
Commemorative postage stamps of Dr. David Lam, in addition to medal, plaque and glass trophy for lifelong service, issued by Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in April. Only one of two TCM practitioners recognized at this level outside of China, Dr. Lam in Canada, and another in the U.S. Dr. Lam declined to go to China to receive his accolades. Retired in Canada, he still teaches and sees legacy patients. (Toronto) 20130928
