- CSI Spadina
Gathering as #SystemsThinking Peer Circle @climatecsi @csiTO, working out yet another approach in the Systems Changes program. Providing a one-page map helps connecting ideas that don't always follow linearly. Challenging balance between theoretical validity, plain language understanding and resonance. The groups is open, with the curious and the immersed. (Climate Ventures, Centre for Social Innovation, Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20190506 - CSI Spadina
Systems Thinking peer circle #ClimateVentures @csiTO trying examples on @Andy_Boynton #BartVictor @JoePine. Product-Process Change Matrix with (i) Invention and Mass Production where demand > supply; (ii) Continuous Improvement and Mass Customization where supply > demand. These entrepreneurs found these explained a lot of the challenges they're experiencing. (Climate Ventures, Centre for Social Innovation, Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20181203 - Cybernetics in Chicago
Temporal Variety of Horizon Bias @redesign at ASC Cybernetics annual meeting. When we think about requisite variety, we don't always think about time. (American Society of Cybernetics, University Center, Chicago, Illinois) 20180818 - Cybernetics in Chicago
Systems sciences discussion @redesign @snousala, with Timothy FH Allen extending the previous day's keynote presentation at greater depth. All of us are ISSS members who coincided at this venue, oriented more towards open systems theory based in biology, and less in cybernetics. Catching everyone while we can. (ASC Cybernetics, University Center, State Street, Chicago, Illinois) 20180818 - Cybernetics in Chicago
Systems research and backstories with Timothy FH Allen + @snousala sharing contexts. Discussion in quiet room beside the main conference meeting. Often the best conversations aren't scheduled formally on the program. (ASC Cybernetics, University Center, State Street, Chicago, Illinois) 20180817 - Cybernetics in Chicago
The Role of Multiple Levels by Timothy F.H. Allen @ASC_Cybernetics keynote speaker. Described systems sciences colleagues often as naive realists. Complexity is the way you look at a system. Funtowicz & Ravetz (1992) see quality in postmodern production as internal, within the process of doing science or creating art. Modern science is hostile to postmodernism. (American Society for Cybernetics, University Center, Chicago, Illinois) 20180816. - Dadaocheng Pier Plaza
Reproduction of a Tangshan Sailing Boat on dryland, with brightly coloured active ships dockside. The Tamsui River Basin was first colonized by Han people in 1683AD. The Huwei region became active as a commercial port by 1861. Before the end of the 19th century, silt buildup in the basin and development of the Keelung Port reduced traffic to passenger travel. (Dadaocheng Pier Plaza, Datong District, Taipei City, Taiwan) 20231012 - Dagu
Modest resto selected by @Ryan_Ing for celebration following Ryerson U. convocation. Northern-style Chinese noodles in "Crossing the Bridge" style, separating broth in 150 degrees C pot from ingredients. Extra noodles at no extra charge. Mainland Chinese-style service, notably brisk. (Dagu Rice Noodles, Dundas Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20180612 - Dai Kuang Wah Herb Market
Visit to a neighbourhood Chinese herbalist, as symptoms of jet lag haven't abated after a few weeks. Diagnosis via classical TCM examination with three-finger pulses, then western standard cuff on upper arm to find my blood pressure high. Prescribed mixing of herbs seemed to include a wider variety of ingredients than I remember from other practitioners, still packaged up as 3 paper bags for decoctions to be steeped at home. (Dai Kuang Wah Herb Market, Gerrard Street East, Toronto, Ontario) 20211208 - Daikokuten Kyoo-ji Temple
Nichiren Buddhist temple built on land donated in 1655. Shogotai troops took refuge within walls in 1868 Battle of Ueno, Imperial Army left bullet holes in the gate. (Daikokuten Kyoo-ji Temple, Nippori Village, Tokyo, Japan) 20170325 - Dairy Bar
Late afternoon pause at local institution for ice cream sundaes and slushies. Sitting at picnic table, casual conversation led to creative possibilities of approaches to conducting workshop to awaken non-rational thinking. Rural pace in the small town enables open mindspace away from urban rush. (Dairy Bar, West Burlington Avenue, Fairfield, Iowa) 20230817 - Dairy Bar
Hadn't left the farm for a few days, so ice cream is a good excuse for a break. Picnic table is new, since the last time we were here. Still looking for better vegan options. (Dairy Bar. Fairfield, Iowa) 20160808 - Danforth Ave. w. of Woodington
Bundled up for bicycling at freezing point, trolling dollar stores for inflatable neck pillows to sleep in upright position on flight to Europe next week. Filled neck pillows now easier to find than inflatable ones. Slow bicycling up hills northbound on a dreary afternoon. (Toronto) 20141218 - Danforth Mennonite Church
Cute book house for Little Free Library, by well-kept front garden on major east-west city street. Mennonite Community opened church in 1911, and urban development has filled in around it. Through mutual ties in Ethiopia, the building is shared since 2011 with the Freedom Gospel Church who worship in the Amharic language. (Danforth Mennonite Church, Woodbine-Lumsden neighbourhood, Danforth Avenue East, Toronto, Ontario) 20170704 - Danforth Village
Long stretch of sidewalk with almost no pedestrians, on a late pre-holiday afternoon with social isolation. On this main street towards the east end, storefronts are wider than in the city centre, so walks seem longer. Maybe one in ten businesses was open, and few had customers. Pedalling bicycle with light traffic on street. (Danforth Avenue, west of Coxwell Avenue, Danforth Village, Toronto, Ontario) 20200409
