- Shibuya Station Block
From Shibuya Hikarie 8th floor, view of redevelopment east of rail tracks in progress for completion by 2020 Olympics. New East Building will have 7 floors underground, and 46 above grade. Crosswalk may eventually look like the scatter crossing on the other side of the tracks, as pedestrians can move to another other corner while traffic lights count down a short period for priority. (Shibuya Station Block East Building under construction, Tokyo, Japan) 20170326 - Sherbourne Commons, south of Queens Quay East, under construction in the spring
Sherbourne Commons, south of Queens Quay East, is still under construction in late April 2009. The ditch doesn't have water flowing, and the sign for No Wading in the pool is superfluous (Toronto, Sunday) 20110424 1700 - Sherbourne Common
From the north of three #JillAnholt (2011) Light Showers towers, water isn't flowing, probably not restarted in spring 2020 before pandemic shutdowns. The original design treated storm water, to be aerated trickled down the mesh veil southbound to the lake. Unseasonable almost-summer temperatures drew teenagers to hang out arond the playground equipment. (Sherbourne Common, Merchants Wharf, Toronto, Ontario) 20201108 - Sheraton Centre Toronto
Waterfall garden from second floor of conference hotel, a peaceful break from busy Queen Street West, just across from Nathan Phillips Square and City Hall. Morning commute on bicycle to meeting, circled around exterior looking for bike racks, settling for chaining around a lamp post. (Sheraton Centre, Queen Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20160831 - Shenkeng Old Street
Beside the modest Shiding/Jishun Temple is a cart reputed to serve the best stinky tofu in the region, taking its time on the grill with a patient lineup of customers. This village dates back to the Qing Dynasty, on the route between the mountainous areas and the harbours in lower lands north. In the Japanese era of the early 20th century, this was a major business centre for trading the tea grown at altitude. (Shenkeng Old Street, Shenkeng district, New Taipei City, Taiwan) 20231014 - Sharpe Street West
Last visit to the family buildings, picking up photographic slide carousels that wouldn't fit on our prior (presumed last) visit. Came and left in less than an hour, routing around the snowbank to load into the car. We already had a meeting in Orillia, so the extended drive north for personal effects was based on expecting that future generations might appreciate these artifacts when elders can't explain them. (Sharpe Street West, Gravenhurst, Ontario) 20191114 - Sharpe Street West
Swinging 1970s bar that was in our family apartment of my childhood over the store, moved downstairs and loaded into truck. Free Stuff Leaving Gravenhurst event advertised on Facebook and Kijiji drew neighbours from Muskoka to take remnants of the former retail store and residence, first established in 1961. Three-hour window welcoming visitors, and we returned to Toronto. (Sharpe Street West, Gravenhurst, Ontario) 29101027 - Shankar Sankaran, Monday plenary
ISSS 2016 Boulder plenary - Shanghai Pudong Airport
Whimsical rooster themed installation on middle of airport, lightens the spirit on the long walk from the airplane, through immigration, to the Maglev train. Impressed on short ride hitting 430 km/h peak, before slowing down at western terminus. (Pudong International Airport, Shanghai, PR China) 20170402 - Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station
Queued at gate 13 for high-speed train to Wuhan. SN showed electronic image of ticket on WeChat and our passports, while most people had paper tickets for the inspector. Smooth ride initially crossed flat land, gradually rising into mountainous region. Train reported speeds up to 210 km/hour. Lady with cart going up aisle sold grapes, mangoes, longan and cucumber, not junk food. (China Railway train D3094-3095, Shanghai Hongqiao station to Hankou station) 20160315 - Shanghai Gallery of Art
Yin Xiuzhen 2005 TVT-Rocket installation of three cloth towers, extends from third floor in light well up to 6th. Gallery is open to public, and closer to the Bund, but maybe the Whampoa Club upstairs enjoys less traffic. (Shanghai Gallery of Art, Three.on the Bund, Shanghai, P R China) 20170404 - Shady Island Seafood
Dinner at dusk by Steveston Fisherman's Wharf. Walked down shoreline to the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Park, observing restorations of buildings of Japanese and Chinese fishing workers back to the 1900s. (Shady Island Seafood, Bayview Street, Steveston Village, Richmond, BC) 20171028 - SFO Terrminal 3 art installation
Japanese Toys! From Kokeshi to Kaiju display at San Francisco Airport, between the speedwalks to T3 departures. Discovered that UA720 at 5:44 a.m. PT must be the first flight out for the day, as under-capacity security personal said I was the third person checked that morning, around 4:15 a.m. (San Francisco Airport) 20131129 0429 - SFO Museum
International Terminal @SFOMuseum exhibition #TheVictorianPaperedWall Exoticism period 1837-1901. Turkish folding chair circa 1880s caught my eye, beside Piano Lamp circa 1875 designed by Edward C. Moore for Tiffany & Co, in front of Persian Wall Fill and Fringe 2021 by Bradley & Bradley . Arrived at airport early for 7am flight to return to Eastern Time, terminal is mostly deserted and United Club lounge isn't yet open. (SFO International Terminal G, San Francisco, California) 20211231 - SFO Museum
Isamu Noguchi (1986) "Akari Table Lamp Model VB13-T" made of washi paper, bamboo and metal. Display cases in International Terminal showing Japanese-American designer (1904-1988), where 2-dimensional origami folding influences 3-dimensional objects. (San Francisco International Airport, International Terminal G, California). 20180517
