Meeting @fortyfoxes in person unintentionally coincided with @wardcunningham weekly videoconference. Humble Greek restaurant had free wifi, so connection to our corner was good. Couple dining at other side of restaurant not concerned. Waiter was friendly, offered two shots of ouzo for dessert. Saw agave succulents earlier in National Palace, so finished the guided tour with a taste of the beverage. Venue was packed, we eventually got a ledge with pulque in natural flavour, then with passionfruit and with guava. Sons declared it as Mexican kombucha, but not worth finishing. We were advised that natural tastes best within a day of harvesting from the source, thereafter the low-alcohol drink is better with a sweetener. Changing of the guard at the Royal Palace of Madrid on Saturday 1pm is for show, as only state ceremonies have been done in the building since the official residence moved in 1975. On the hour, the two guards and the horses are changed. Arriving late for the previous half hour, we strolled the greenery of the Jardines de Sabatini to the north, where stables were formerly located. Graduate students and public invited to "Wicked Problems, Affordances, Service Systems: Some perspectives for designing". Abstract: Recent research into the practices of designing includes reflection on ways in which the domains for designing and the role(s) of designers have changed. These inquiries echo some of the same questions that arose during the Design Methods Movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. This presentation focuses on exploring some perspectives associated with 21st century advances and challenges to designers: 1. Solution to a problem in context ~ Wicked problems 2. Functions in things ~ Affordances alongside interactions 3. Production systems ~ Service systems The types of projects, activities and technologies for the contemporary designer have changed. The practical and philosophical implications incorporating these perspectives will be discussed. Slides at coevolving.com/commons/20171124-wicked-problems-affordanc...
