ISSS 2016 Boulder plenary session sketch by Patricia Kambitsch, @playthink Jeremish Osbourne-Gowey, Bruce Milne, Joshua Tewksbury - Playter Estates
Local preconference hosted by @redesign, in advance of @RSDSymposium. Last session @aupward on progress @FlourishingBiz with origin story, and challenges with publishing in academic journals. All-day meeting an opportunity to meet active researchers in person, I arrived late afternoon due to prior commitments. (Playter Estates, Toronto, Ontario) 20211023 - Playter Estates
Salon hosted by @redesign + @playthink, in advance of systemic design conference in a few weeks that will be centered in Delft, across the Atlantic Ocean. More social than topical, amongst colleagues who haven't met in person in many months. As with many parties, everyone ends up in the kitchen. (Playter Estates, Toronto, Ontario) 20211016 - Play reading with supertitles
Workshop @FuGenTheatre of Da Jia by Sophie Gee Nervous Hunter mixing English, Cantonese + Mandarin. Story in development, feels like Canadian Chinese families - Platja de la Barceloneta
View from Barceloneta Beach down the coast south slightly after dusk might not have been improved 10 minutes earlier, because the set doesn't set when facing east. The seaside neighbourhood is a peninsula, with restaurants and hotels ringing the waterfront. Coming from a hotel on the west side, the bus route took us by two large cruise ships at port. (Platja de la Barceloneta, Barcelona, Spain) 20221003 - Platia Anagenniseos
Teenagers and skateboarders hanging out after 11 pm in a park in the Kaisariani suburb of Athens, just east of the Acropolis. Town was originally founded in 1922 as a refugee camp for Greeks driven out of Asia Minor. Just south of the University of Athens, the district has become a middle class neighbourhood. The park is ringed by restaurants and shops. (Platia Anagenniseos, Kaisariani, Greece) 20151114 - Place Dumon
Shopping for artisinal white boudin (pork sausage with raisins) and black boudin (blood sausage with truffles) at the Saturday market, amongst the larger variety of vendors than Tuesdays or Fridays. Walked by more stands to find Chinese cabbage, and then looked into the "dead bird" store with partridge and quail in the window. (Place Dumon, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Brussels. Belgium) 20211106 - Place Dumon
Cutting lotte zeeduivel (angler monkfish) for steamboat hotpot dinner later. Fish is so ugly, sellers display without head, then remove filaments and membranes for home cooking. Firm flesh, won't dissolve in soup. Humbled by Belgian market offering pheasant, hare, horsemeat, spooning out steak tartare into takeout containers. Variety back home is so much smaller. (Marché de Stockel, Place Dumon, Woluwé-Saint-Pierre, Belgium) 20161126 - Pizzeria Via Mercanti
Wood-fired Napoletana pizzas in a relaxed Kensington Market vibe a nice change from a week of Cantonese cuisine. Downtown evening with sister and brother-in-law, who moved away from downtown Toronto (and uptown Richmond Hill), and haven't seen how much the city has changed. After-dark stroll across College Street and down Spadina Avenue, alongside viewing new condo apartments of sons now residing on the west side of town. (Pizzeria Via Mercanti, Augusta Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20220810 - Pizzeria Via Mercanti
Massive blue-tiled wood-fired oven with pizza spatula follows traditional Italian methods in the branch located in Little India. Diningroom has lots of space at lunchtime, as a good place for a relaxed business discussion. On diets, we split a pizza and a salad. (Pizzeria Via Mercanti, Gerrard Street East, Little India, Toronto) 20170511 - Pivotal Toronto
Minimum Viable Platform (not Product), says @caseywest @pivotal @cloudnativefdn road show, should put ensure on Viable, not on Minimum. Earlier cited Gartner projection that by 2020, 75% of application development of digital businesses will be built, not bought. Said Amazon declares releasing changes every 11 seconds, but thinks it could be every second. (Pivotal, Toronto Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20160520 - Pit Inn Shinjuku
Jazz duo with masters Fumio Karashima on piano and Yoshio Suzuki on bass. Repertoire of jazz standards, with creative variations far from the originals. Strings ringing, two musicians, nowhere to hide. Great acoustics in historic basement venue, maybe one-quarter full for the second set on a Thursday night, 9:30 to 10:40 p.m. so that patrons can get the subway home and go to work on the next day. (Pit Inn Shinjuku, Tokyo) 20150305 - Pioneer Courthouse Square
Signpost citing distances includes some destinations en route home via air flights. Rainy Sunday dusk walk from U. Oregon on the north, into the city center at south revealed wide streets with light traffic and few pedestrians. (Pioneer Courtyard Square, SW 6th Avenue, Portland, Oregon) 20181028
