- Deepening systems knowledge
Lunch @MitroffCrisis discussing complexity vs. complicatedness, and ways of teaching systems thinking to students. Ian had a copy of "The Collapse of Complex Societies" by Joseph Tainter on his shelf, and said that he would read it on my recommendation. (Oakland, CA) 20151210 - NIDOs BackYard
After ordering a beer and a horchata (yellow with tumeric) from the bar, the Tostadas de Atun came as expected, while the Aguachilde de Negro de Pescado con Chiltepin was a surprise -- served in a bowl with a spoon, and tortilla chips on the side. We were laughing as the waiter capturing the photo was dodging a fern moving with the slow breeze. Sunny, but not warm enough to be wearing shorts. (NIDOs BackYard, Oak Street, Oakland, California) 20220428 - SFI class fishbowl
Inner circle of discussants on systemic design methods, with outer circle of observers who can swap into inner. Smaller group enables richer interaction amongst active participants, questions build amongst students paying attention. (Strategic Foresight and Innovation program, OCAD U., Toronto) 20150319 - Myra Lokka Park by Vøyenbrua
Dusk walk from U. Oslo to Grunerlokka includes scenic path south on east bank of Akerselva River. Instead of 40 minute commute in and put off city centre, 70 minute downhill stroll was relaxing. - Centre for Social Innovation Annex
Annual holiday gathering @csiTO featuring program with @AvenueRoadArts to create monoprints. Pattern on scratch foam plate, brayer roller with gelatin pain to create the master, then pressing with a batten to produce the print. Glad to see some familiar faces, met a few new members and plus-ones standing at cocktail table enjoying the buffet. (Centre for Social Innovation Annex, Bathurst Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20231207 - Libby Leshgold Gallery
Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan (2017) "Bound: Project Another Country", luggage and rope. Gallery just opened last week in new building. opened in September, fortunate timing for our west coast visit. (Libby Leshgold Gallery, Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver, BC) 20171030 - Silverstein's Bakery
Unlabelled orange door leads customers into working bakery. Lots of racks of breads cooling, no counter, staff ring up purchases on old mechanical cash register. Production at this location since 1953, I lived 2 blocks away in the 1970s and never thought retail for this mostly wholesale operation. (Silverstein's Bakery, McCaul Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20160414 - Tour Noire
Watchtower from the first walls of Brussels, constructed during early 13th century Roman times, which were outgrown so that by 1356 the second larger walls were built. The superfluous first walls were dismantled between the 16th and 18th centuries, except for the Tour Noire (Black Tower), which the mayor insisted was to be retained, and surrounded by shops. The tower was recognized as a listed landmark in Brussels by 1937. When the district around the Place Sainte-Catherine was targeted for redevelopment in the late 1990s, the Atelier d'Art Urban replaced the shops with a new hotel designed to accommodate the tower. The hotel became to be managed by Novotel. (Tour Noire, Brussels) 20150925 - Premonition: Ukrainian Art Now
Anna Sorokovaya 2013 "Illusory Body" illuminated hanging clothes is lit blue by the neon installation on the other side of the room. Some Saatchi galleries reserved for the Wine Experience London, so visitors are directed to upper floor exhibitions. - Elmsley Place
Red bow, green fringes, white and blue lights on the laneway leading up to Brennan Hall. Originally a residential neighbourhood of Victorian houses in the 1890s, St. Michael's College purchased title to the street in the 1920s. Residences for students are steps away from the commercial hubbub of Yorkville. (Elmsley Place, St. Michael's College, University of Toronto) 20221129 - Tinuno
Kamayan feast of Filipino grilled fish, squid, shrimp, kebabs, pork and garlic rice went quickly with everyone eating with hands in plastic gloves. Visitors from Vancouver a good occasion for a special meal at a venue where reservations are required even for an early dinner. A fun experience, relieving the stress of planes arriving late, and then driving through rush hour traffic. (Tinuno, Howard Street, St. Jamestown, Toronto, Ontario) 20171220 - Wolfson College
Lecture by @ireneclng on "Creating New Markets in the Digital Economy. Contents included updates of 2013 book, plus "Payment is applause: markets and business models past, present and future" given at Wolfson@50 anniversary lecture on the previous date. (Wolfson College, Cambridge, England) 20151119 - English River lake freighter
Great Lakes water seem clear of ice, with small bulk carrier moored by Lafarge terminal in the Polson slip of the Toronto PortLands. In early spring, the vegetation doesn't obscure visibility, over the fence from the Chinese supermarket. (Cherry Street, Toronto) 20150406 - Corktown
Retreat led by @redesign for designwithdialogue.com st-on.org unifytoronto.ca reflecting on progress with communities. @DwDTO started in August 2008, will have been running for a decade this year. Breakouts gave time for social talk over potluck snacks. (Corktown, Toronto, Ontario) 20171214 - SJSU Art Building
Relaxed 6-hour studio @rarar @SJSUArt Advanced Digital Video covering motion graphics in ART 105 course. Students showed work-in-progress video, and reflected on the craft they're developing. Watched some VFX to aspire towards, then hands-on learning. Conscious of how post-production budgets could balloon if frame-by-frame detail is done. (Art Building, San Jose State University, California) 20170317
