- 6th Ave. At 53rd St.
NYC food trucks, customers dining al fresco, street performer fiddling, late afternoon with a March chill. Around the corner from the Museum of Modern Art, where we saw the new new Bjork Black Lake video installation, 2 facing screens, 49 speakers on walls and ceiling. (New York City) 20150324 - @TorontoJazzFestival opener
Tara Davidson sax, @DanielRFortin bass, @ErnestoCervini drums @TorontoLibrary North York concourse for early evening set. Band has known each other more than a decade. Played a lot of new original songs, yet to be recorded, including "31 Days", which is how long it took Tara to write it last year. (North York Central Library) 20150615 - Accelerated Discovery Lab
Former library space has been repurposed so that researchers and industry practitioners can collaborate in a central, open space. Workshop on Mycroft Cognitive Mediator moved out of windowless meeting room for an hour, in a change on scenery. Presentation includes Labbook prototype currently under research. (IBM Almaden, San Jose, California) 20151215 - AGO, Before and After the Horizon
Bonnie Devine, 2014-2015 "Battle for the Woodlands", part of the Anishinaabe Artists of the Great Lakes exhibition. Reproduction of pre-Confederation (1867) map of Canada. New sculptural element 2015 "Anishinaabitude" in foreground. (Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto) 20150902 - Alvar Aalto puisto
Iconic Alvar Aalto signature building of former Helsinki U. of Technology under wraps in renovation for new Aalto U. Undergraduate Centre bringing together students in technology, business and arts and design studies. Metro station across the street scheduled to start operation in fall 2016 as part of first phase of Lansimetro. On campus to visit my Ph.D. supervisor to check in on progress. (Alvar Aalto puisto, Otaniemi, Espoo, Finland) 20150907 - Antwerp Chinatown gate
Day trip results in finding Chinatown gate in Antwerp, with Central Station just a little south beyond. Stone lions at the ends of block both north and south on Van Wesenbekestraat. At 6:30 p.m. on a Thursday night, surprised that the majority of restaurants are closed, as are Chinese supermarkets. Found a reasonably priced noodle shop that just opened a month ago, so super-clean with earnest service. Wending way back through through diamond district, all storefronts were closed up securiely for the evening. We arrived at station two minutes before return train to Brussels scheduled to leave, so no waiting time. (Chinatown and Central Train Station, Antwerp, Belgium) 20150924 - Arabiakeskus
Red berries on trees, approaching the Hämeentie Factory Block of the Arabia district, known for its long history in design. Are those rowan (mountain ash) trees? Attended the "Creating the Mindset of Sustainable Societies" class, one of the core courses in the Master's Programme in Creative Sustainability at Aalto University. Caught afternoon student presentations on final day of class. Challenged to be critical when prior context of assignments wasn't fully explained. Will see the students two more days this week. (Arabiakeskus, Helsinki, Finland) 20151006 - Argiro Student Center queue
Vegetarian lunch was a good excuse to visit the Maharishi School of Management, but the lineup to enter the cafeteria servery was too long. We ran up the exit staircase to peek into one dining hall, where finding a table for a group of four would have been a challenge. Lots of people moving around with food on trays. Parking lots outside were full. With the menu of the day feature Chinese sweet and sour tofu, we opted for the buffet at Pizza Ranch in town (and ate too much, there). (Argiro Student Center, Maharishi School of Management, Fairfield, Iowa) 20150729 - Armenian lunch
Zataar, beef manakeesh, kishek with sujuk, moutabbal, tabbouleh, then a half order of mixed BBQ platter. Extraordinary flavour when the food arrived hot to the table, declining as it cooled in the approaching winter. Celebration of DY's birthday deferred to weekend when family could be together. (Paramount Fine Foods, Yonge Street' Toronto) 20151206 - ARN T5 Pier F
Climate Portal @Arlanda airport Stockholm gives three choices of weather simulators: Go Hot, Go Big (cities) or Go Cold. I chose to Go Cold, and got a large screen blast of downhill skiing. Interesting promotion of travel, while reminding visitors of the variety of weather choices we implicitly make. (Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Terminal 5, Pier F) 20150930 - Art at Union Station
As part of Villa Toronto, "Outliers" (2014) JD Walsh, in a narrow booth in the grand hall of the train station under construction. Images projected on the "cymbal" worth watching, although conditions in the venue are less than optimal. Exhibit by the Cooper Cole gallery, expected European works as Villa Raster is centered in Warsaw, Poland. (Toronto Union Station) 20150122 - AsianPLoP 2015 introduction
Experienced pattern language shepherds start off the conference by demonstrating how a writer's workshop works. The AsianPLoP style can have a more interactive dialogue with author, than the rigourous PLoP style where the author remains outside the discussion. (4th Asian Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs, Waseda University, Tokyo) 20150306 - AsianPLoP Day 1 plenary
Hiroshi Nakano, "Japanese Spirituality and Pattern Language", insight into Christopher Alexander's pursuit of: "What is beauty? What is good?". Described some history of the past 50 years, now suggesting "project language" for specific works that might accumulate to a "pattern language" over time. A "manual for a centering process" has episodes that connect with and enhance the prior episodes, repeating endlessly to become the timeless way. (4th Asian Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs, Waseda University, Tokyo) 20150306 Digest at ingbrief.wordpress.com/2015/03/06/20150306-0955-hiroshi-nakano-japanese-spirituality-and-pattern-language-asianplop-2015 - Astro Stage
Greek dancing by @LevendiaX Hellenic Folklore Assoc @Taste_Danforth, near Jones Ave. Pedestrian traffic seems denser at the east end of the street festival, with kiddie rides and more community tents. Since we live within biking distance, the neighbourhood, we can visit when the crowds aren't there. (Taste of the Danforth, Greektown, Toronto) 20150808 - Austrian Airlines Toronto to Vienna
Just realised that I'm breaking my personal rule to fly across oceans on a carrier with a Canadian flag. Direct flight for short trip trumped brand preference. Fortunately, the Austrians aren't known as an aggressive culture. I expect to nap, and wake up in Vienna. (OS 72, still boarding at Pearson International Airport YYZ) 20150702
