- Zhangwu Sichuan
Dinner for Qingming Tomb-Sweeping Day, since public holiday on a Monday still has most people off work. Chose Sichuan resto near Tongji University, left half of dishes filled with red peppers too spicy to eat. (Zhangwu Sichuan, Shanghai, PR China) 20170403 - YYC
Canadian designed YYC Link passenger shuttle has human drivers, and no wait for ride. Shaves minutes off changing terminals. Amazed that 60 minute connection including immigration and terminal changes is comfortable. (YYC, Calgary, Alberta) 20171022 - Yorkville Park
Strolling south on Bellair Avenue, the urban park is lit up by green mist-emitting light columns between rows of trees. We usually don't frequent this high-end neighbourhood. Unusually, we went for a movie on a Saturday night, with a one-week promotion of Tuesday night pricing. (Yorkville Park, Bellair Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20170826 - Yorkville
Hazelton stage @TorontoJazzFest @crymmusic Chelsea and the Cityscape, the more pop-oriented group of bandleader McBride. She says that she would rather play radio songs than singing about her old boyfriends. (Toronto Jazz Festival, Hazelton Avenue, Yorkville, Toronto, Ontario) 20170627 - Yonge Street, north of St. Clair Ave.
View north from midtown on a clear winter day, beyond Deer Park to the west and Mount Pleasant Cemetery to the east. Beyond the Beltline Trail bridge, urban density increases with concrete towers. (Yonge Street, north of St. Clair Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20171220 - Yangdian Taoist Temple
Upper and lower level rooms each house one or more deities representing a variety of qualities, ringing two large buildings in the courtyard centre. Gate fee gave me a bundle of joss sticks, I followed the cue of others to light them, bow four directions, and then stand the sticks up in an urn of ashes. Musicians playing, priests chanting, echoing through the large compound. (Royal Qinci Yangdian Taoist Temple, Pudong, Shanghai, P R China) 20170408 - Yamate Dori gate, Shinagawa-ku
Unexpected wooden gate at west end of main street, just northeast of Shimbamba station. Wayfaring for a new art gallery, routed through Shinagawa station, intending on train 2 stops south, but mistakenly got trapped on the express service to Haneda Airport. Rode circle back and used smartphone to navigate through a tidy neighbourhood, definitely few non-residents in the area. (Yamate Dori gate, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan) 20170330 - Wujiaochang
Emerged from subway into flashing streams of light with The Egg, by ZHONG Song. Steel shroud covers overpass, above the five-road intersection. Needed compass to navigate around the mazes of modern shopping malls. (Wujiaochang, Yangpu, Shanghai, PR China) 20171127 - Woodgreen Church
Rear view of facade facing Queen Street shows steeple and stained glass windows as last to be demolished in lot from Booth Avenue to Logan Avenue. Our laneway that dead ends to the north is usually still open, with a hazard tape strung across the path periodically. (Woodgreen Church, Queen Street East, Riverside district, Toronto, Ontario) 20170307 - Woodbine Park
Dance platform in front of Son de Cuba Orquestra at Beaches Jazz Latin Carnival, for audience who can't sit still to the beats. Many families in lounge chairs enjoying the music and weather, fenced off area for beer garden to the south. Such an embarrassment of riches for music festivals this summer, so little time. (Beaches Jazz Latin Carnival, Woodbine Park, Toronto, Ontario) 20170715 - Woodbine Beach
Mounds of earth signal that lagoon is man-made, and the beach is renewed each spring for warm weather recreation. Public park opened in the late 1970s was originally a marsh, with major dredging in the 1920s. (Woodbine Beach, Ashbridges Bay, Toronto, Ontario) 20170427 - Wong's Ice Cream
Took home vegan coconut mango sticky rice ice cream + vegan lemongrass lime sorbet, after we sampled a variety of flavours. Wanted to take a packed pint of the former, but small daily production lots meant two scoops of two flavours instead. New business only opened in neighbourhood in the past few months. (Wong's Ice Cream, Gerrard Street East, Toronto, Ontario) 20170701 - Willcocks Street
Temperature swing up over 10 degrees C in mid February a new record for Toronto. Wore sunglasses on bike ride to U. Toronto and Chinatown. Campus may be quieter than usual, at start of reading week. (Willcocks Street, University of Toronto) 20160218 - Walter Hall
Generations of jazz @UofTMusic, with @MyriadThree as second of five acts in a soft seat theatre. Musicians unusually encouraged to fill time with chat, as rearranging instruments and stands on stage took time. (Walter Hall, University of Toronto Faculty of Music, Queens Park Circle, Toronto, Ontario) 20171110 - Visual Arts Building, U. Iowa
Striking central atrium with ramps spiralling multiple levels upward. Arts installations still in progress, with end of term nearing. Walking tour of campus on a clear spring day. (Visual Arts Building, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa) 20170502
