- HAMK
Soft launch @daviding with @MinLii of Open Innovation Learning book in Finland, in advance of formal event in January. In conjunction with Open Data Hame meeting, led to practical questions about engaging greater participation supporting regional travel and tourism initiatives. (HAMK Häme University of Applied Sciences, Visamäentie, Hämeenlinna, Finland) 20171204 - Ravintola Mezopotamya
Knitting together parallel histories on systems thinking and university research projects. Careers and social ties had intersected many times, but the women had never met. Bonding proved strong when comparing photos on mobile phones of cats. Language switched to Finnish when I left the table, and back to English when I rejoined. Casual Kurdish buffet cafe was a quiet place for 3 hour conversation on a weekday evening. (Cafe Caisa / Ravintola Mezopotamya, Kaisaniemi, Helsinki) 20160216 - Triton Museum of Art
Steel "Hibiscus" by Bill Gould @ArtikA3 inside @TritonMuseum rotunda, even though it's an waist-high outdoor sculpture that could weather whatever climate. Part of large exhibition with orange slices on wires hanging under the skylight. Sunday afternoon reception with popcorn and jellybeans attracted a large audience for Statewide 2D Competition and Exhibition. (Triton Museum of Art, City of Santa Clara, California) 20170312 - OCADU Richmond
Intro by Jeremy Bowes @OCADU_SFI Understanding Systems & Systemic Design class. Sames slides as yesterday, part-time students challenged me for more clarity, took break for full brains after 75 minutes. Another 20 minutes to finish up 4th section, and then a few questions. Class would have benefited by stepping through some real-life use of the structured form for service-systems thinking, we'll have to think about more workshop time in future presentations. (OCAD University, 205 Richmond Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20170309 - Post-lecture dinner
Warm hospitality following pattern of preparing dinner in AS's kitchen, coming up to Chinese New Year. Old friends and new acquaintances numbered 13 around the table this time. Menu favourites included vegetarian ma po tofu and stick dried bean curd (foo jook) and reconstituted dried shitake mushrooms brought in suitcase from Toronto. Switched seats before dessert to talk to more people at the long table. (Töölö, Helsinki, Finland) 20160202 - Don River Park
Beyond construction fences, the urban marsh, playhill and pavilion would seem to be mostly completed in the new Don River Park. Rerouting of Bayview Avenue connecting to River Street is still underway and residential housing is still skeleton, so children jumping the gates are a low probability. (Toronto) 20120609 1458 - Hua Sheng
Busy day in Spadina Chinatown, where Good Friday isn't an observed holiday. Since local stores on the east side are mostly closed, biked cross town on a sunny day to pick up Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa cough syrup. Looking for some symptomatic relief at home. (Hua Sheng, Chinatown, Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20170414 - St. Michael's Hospital
Signed up for MyChart personal record app at Patient Registration on Donnelly wing south, after seeing new brochure. Appointment with orthopedic surgeon about Achilles tendon confirmed healing, the additional mobility and strength is left to the physiotherapist. (St. Michael's Hospital, Queen Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20180329 - Palo Alto Farmers Market
Mammoth artichokes at the California Avenue Farmer's Market, with @warstrekkid nephew Kevin on an early Sunday morning. Practically everything seems organic, much sourced from Watsonville nearby. Troubles of the world seem so far away. (Palo Alto, California) 20120506 0913 - Grange Park
Rear side of Art Gallery of Ontario, exterior wall colours bright on a sunny day. Bicycle had a flat tire on Spadina, decided to walk further east to position for RDI to pick up in car. (Grange Park, Beverley Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20180530 - Ice and drainspouts, Hameenlinna
Field work more as art than science, as @minlii emerges a theme in thawing temperatures. Curated as a collage on Facebook photos (Hameenlinna, Finland) 20120408 1340 - Peoria Riverfront Museum
Seward Johnson (2014) "Return Visit" 31-foot painted bronze dwarfs spouse referring to her own book. A contemporary common man receives the 1854 Gettysburg Address delivered by Abraham Lincoln in Peoria in 1854, relevant still today. We only had a short visit around the grounds, and the Caterpillar Visitor Center next door, en route from Indianapolis IN to Fairfield IA, not enough time to see the exhibits inside. (Peoria Riverfront Museum, Washington Street, Peoria, Illinois) 20180809 - Scrap Metal Gallery, in the back courtyard down the laneway
The gallery is at 11 Dublin Street, but it's at the rear of the building. Visitors will need to walk east to the laneway, and then south to find the courtyard to the back. - Dundas Square fountains
Dancing fountains at plaza on a sunny fall afternoon when no formal events have been scheduled. Tourists stop to have their photos taken. Busker hawks his skills to draw a crowd. A chance for bicycling without coat, forecast is rain over next few days. 20110922 1826 - Santa Clara Produce
Down-to-earth greengrocer, sampling local apples and pears by walking around offering slices off a knife. California produce, Lebanese packaged goods, Vietnamese baguettes. We chose flatbreads: lavash, and flour tortillas. AHI bought a whole jackfruit for an afternoon barbeque with a new Latin dance group, he's sure to make an impression. Store ownership changed hands in fall 2016, renovations were noticed. (Santa Clara Produce, Scott Boulevard, Santa Clara, California) 20170311
