- Kingston Portsmouth Olympic Harbour
On the route home, by Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, right beside the Kingston Penitentiary, a maximum security prison. Noting the many boats on trailers that anyone could just drive up, hook up, and tow away, without supervision or security. Does the prison next door give thieves any pause to think about potential consequences? (Kingston, Ontario) 20130816 1858 - King's Cross Station
Atrium ceiling support mesh extends down to ground floor. Illumination bounces light off celling, not much daylight coming in on cloudy London afternoon. Congestion at LHR slowed flight from Athens, medical emergency delayed deplaning, then more than an hour in innovation line. Foresaw fallback train, so stress of waiting is mitigated. (King's Cross Railway Station, London, England) 20151115 - King's Cross Station
Train platform canopy. Missed 1:48 train to York, waiting for 4:47. Flight Athens- Heathrow was late, had to wait for medical emergency to deplane, and then immigration line for non-EU visitors was over an hour. Fortunately, had bought a ticket for any train today, so penalty is just waiting. Opportunity for soup in Chinese resto across the street. (King's Cross Railway Station, London, England) 20151115 - King Street West at Peter Street
Encountered the first raised transit stop platform in town, where bicyclists and pedestrians take turns through a narrow lane previously a parking space. On Easter Sunday, streetcars paused only momentarily, with few passengers boarding. Only pedestrians of note were lined up outside the pharmacy, with respectable distances between them. (King Street West at Peter Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20200412 - King Street West at John Street
Wider sidewalks by restaurants in the theatre district has enabled city dwellers finally in Covid Phase 2 reopening to enjoy a summer Friday night physically together. Bicycling by the storefronts, I noticed the interiors were largely vacant, so the 2 metre distancing wouldn't be a problem. This cluster of open businesses isn't the norm, however; nearby blocks see maybe 25% with lights on to welcome customers. (King Street West at John Street, Theatre District, Toronto, Ontario) 20200626 - King Spadina District
Family dinner with special recognition for successful PhD dissertation defence earlier in the week. Reflection on 6 years living in Toronto, will be moving to Hong Kong for a professorship in a few weeks. Watched newly transferred videos of childhood cottage visits, as well as delivery in the hospital at childbirth. (King Spadina district, Toronto, Ontario) 20230726 - Kiinalainen Uusivuosi
Lantern dance at 10th Chinese New Year festival in Helsinki. Program of dancers, musicians and kung fu ran throughout Sunday afternoon to usher in the Year of the Monkey. With the foggy day persistent after sunset, the fireworks over nearby Töölönlahti seemed to explode low altitude for a public show. (Keskuskatu, Helsinki, Finland) 20160107 - Kiemo Galerija Courtyard Gallery
Sidestepping northward through the parking lots between apartments, we found the 3-dimensional pink elephant sculpture repurposed from a shopping centre in Vilnius, installed in 2019 by #VytenisJakas. Situated on a warehouse too, the 4 metre high, 6 metre long, 200 kg artwork is much larger than the pink elephant 2-dimensional wall drawing named Deimūras, first installed in 2014. Residents living in the surrounding buildings appeared to be patient with tourists inspecting the variety of drawings and photographs outside their homes. (Kiemo Galerija Courtyard Gallery, Kiemo Galerija Courtyard Gallery, E. Ožeškienės gatvė, Kaunas, Lithuania) 20230328 - Kiba Park Bridge and fountain plaza
Rainy walk to Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo on a different route from past trips. Path from Kiba station north through park leads to landmark Kiba Koen Ohashi bridge, over Kasaibashi Street and the Sendaiborigawa River. (Kiba Park, Tokyo) 20150226 - Kiasma
Julia Varela (2016) X/5.000 from the series Hijacked, plasma screens crumpled and rendered useless. Inspired by terrorists erecting screens in Mosel to promote propaganda. Museum exhibition of Ars17 features contemporary artists on the digital revolution. (Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Mannerheiminaukio, Helsinki, Finland) 20171201 - Kiasma
Brian Eno (1999) Memory Flowers is 16 speakers facing upwards on stems, playing ambient music. First shown in 2000 in a solo show, brought out of storage for Kiasma Collection Exhibition. Emmi and J.P. came in late afternoon for the first Friday of the month free admission, well-timed to avoid the 5 pm crush at the coat check. (Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Mannerheiminaukio, Helsinki, Finland) 20161202 - Kiasma
Art is free on first Friday night of the month at the Kiasma. The exhibition of "Demonstrating Minds: Disagreements in Contemporary Art" may reflect the prevailing pessimistic mood in the country. The long slow ramp up to the second floor is a famous feature designed by architect Stephen Holl. (Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland) 20160205 - Key Bridge from Rosslyn
Cloudy Sunday morning overlooking Potomac River into Washington DC. View from 9th floor hotel balcony, don't see the joggers and cyclists that we saw yesterday, but we are an hour earlier - Kew Beach
Overenthusiastic passerby captures nonsharp image of walk on boardwalk at dusk. Visitors from Finland enjoying Toronto, except a warm day for us is a hot day for them. Happy that they've felt comfortable in our city, they said there's more urban walking neighbourhoods than in Montreal. (Kew Beach, Toronto, Ontario) 20230728 - Kew Beach
Unexpected elevation on the beach, with dune ecosystem project @TRCA_HQ to curb shoreline erosion and provide a habitat for shoreline waterfowl. Sand south of the boardwalk, fenced mound, and then sand beyond to Lake Ontario. Unaccustomed to seeing girls in bikinis in the urban setting.
