- King Spadina District
Family dinner with special recognition for successful PhD dissertation defence earlier in the week. Reflection on 6 years living in Toronto, will be moving to Hong Kong for a professorship in a few weeks. Watched newly transferred videos of childhood cottage visits, as well as delivery in the hospital at childbirth. (King Spadina district, Toronto, Ontario) 20230726 - King Street West at John Street
Wider sidewalks by restaurants in the theatre district has enabled city dwellers finally in Covid Phase 2 reopening to enjoy a summer Friday night physically together. Bicycling by the storefronts, I noticed the interiors were largely vacant, so the 2 metre distancing wouldn't be a problem. This cluster of open businesses isn't the norm, however; nearby blocks see maybe 25% with lights on to welcome customers. (King Street West at John Street, Theatre District, Toronto, Ontario) 20200626 - King Street West at Peter Street
Encountered the first raised transit stop platform in town, where bicyclists and pedestrians take turns through a narrow lane previously a parking space. On Easter Sunday, streetcars paused only momentarily, with few passengers boarding. Only pedestrians of note were lined up outside the pharmacy, with respectable distances between them. (King Street West at Peter Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20200412 - King's Cross Station
Atrium ceiling support mesh extends down to ground floor. Illumination bounces light off celling, not much daylight coming in on cloudy London afternoon. Congestion at LHR slowed flight from Athens, medical emergency delayed deplaning, then more than an hour in innovation line. Foresaw fallback train, so stress of waiting is mitigated. (King's Cross Railway Station, London, England) 20151115 - King's Cross Station
Train platform canopy. Missed 1:48 train to York, waiting for 4:47. Flight Athens- Heathrow was late, had to wait for medical emergency to deplane, and then immigration line for non-EU visitors was over an hour. Fortunately, had bought a ticket for any train today, so penalty is just waiting. Opportunity for soup in Chinese resto across the street. (King's Cross Railway Station, London, England) 20151115 - Kingston Portsmouth Olympic Harbour
On the route home, by Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, right beside the Kingston Penitentiary, a maximum security prison. Noting the many boats on trailers that anyone could just drive up, hook up, and tow away, without supervision or security. Does the prison next door give thieves any pause to think about potential consequences? (Kingston, Ontario) 20130816 1858 - Kitchen at Aalto Design Factory
Drawers with "free to use food" and fridge where "unlabelled food can be used freely" illustrate Finnish cooperative design culture, simple and clear. Real time video feed of Tongji Design Factory in Shanghai shows how small the world has become. - Kites and tent at Woodbine Beach, Victoria Day 2011
A string of kites, and a snall tent on the sand at Woodbine Beach. Victoria Day marks the unofficial start of summer in Canada. Shorts and sandals at 24 degrees C, cool breeze. 20110523 1800 - Kitsilano
Reminiscing back to July 1984, when DY moved into my apartment, followed in the next month as an uncommitted girlfriend leaving Vancouver for an uncertain future in Toronto. I had lived in the apartment with the big picture window since November 1982, as a graduate student at UBC. The building looks much the same today, although the West 4th Avenue commercial strip has since densified. (1960 Waterloo Street, Kitsilano, Vancouver, BC) 20201026 - Kitsilano Beach
Volleyball courts full on a sunny day, next to English Bay, with the mountains of the north shore as background. Leisurely stroll west to Elsje Point, and then west to Point Grey Park. Bright days like this leads visitors to forget the grey days from November through March. (Kitsilano Beach, Vancouver, BC) 20201031 - Kitstaya
Relaxed lunch in neighbourhood where I lived 1982-1984. I met DY back then, and KY and TW were still dating. Nostalgic, and a lifetime ago. (Kitstaya, West Broadway, Kitsilano, Vancouver, BC) 20171026 - Koenji High
Tear down for next band to start within 10 minutes, in Total Feedback show featuring shoegazing style. Saw four of six 30-minute sets. Most enjoyed edy two arc band, also saw スプール spool, Al Van She's Coming and Magic Love in basement hall with high ceilings. Upstairs, a quieter duo in the lounge. Reminded of the power of well-engineered live music, a stark contrast to the earbud generation. (Koenji High, Suganami ward, Tokyo, Japan) 20170326 - Koffler Centre of the Arts
Exhibiting "the chrysanthemum has opened twelve times", @artkarentam, conversing with #ShellieZhang @KofflerArts. Talk began with inspiration of formal photograph of grandfather, leading to exploration of history of staged images sent back to families in Toisan. In addition to photos, installation of portrait studio settings and backgrounds.constructed in collaboration with father and mother. (Koffler Centre of the Arts, Shaw Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20190126 - Koffler Gallery
Show+tell @KofflerArts Kimberly Rose, Mona Filip, Sameer Farooq, Jared Stanley, Lisa Ellis on Objects of Affection panel. Response to Esther Shalev-Gerz (2016) The Gold Room exhibition, Mona brought an artifact for interpretation. Museum conservator Lisa spoke of metal composition, poet Jared admired curved edge, visual artist Sameer wondered about users sociopolitically, shaman Kimberly saw it as one in a set of 80-year old culinary utensils. It's a sieve that Mona's great-grandfather tinsmith made that now is a kitchen ornament. (Koffler Gallery, Artscape Youngplace, Toronto, Ontario) 20180603 - Kolbeh
Persian restaurant sees koobideh kebab sampled by two, while the majority opts for the more familiar falafel. We'll join the rest of the family in the North Bay, for the official ceremonies tomorrow. Genial service by head waiter, unexpected with the casual decor. (Kolbeh, El Camino Real, Mountain View, CA) 20180511
