Lightning talks at GTALUG Greater Toronto Area Linux User Group are being recorded on video. First time attending, I offered to talk for 5 minutes on Desktop Environments, followed by 5 minutes for questions. Others are technically deeper. Linux isn't my full time job, but I've spent the past 10 years of my life using it. (George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre, Ryerson University, Church Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20170711 - Vantaa Gate 22
Mobile installation of white sheets above an airport gate moves slowly with the air flows higher in the terminal. Walked from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 in hopes of viewing the advertised art installations at Gate 31, but aborted that plan when the long linear nature of the terminal emperiled catching my departure from Gate 15. There used to be an art installation in Terminal 1, now since replaced by a boring row of carrals for working. (Helsinki Airport, Vantaa, Finland) 20170817 - Vantaa Design Gallery
An invitation to enjoy Finnish design at Helsinki Vantaa Airport leads to an installation of chairs designed by Finns, with biographies on display. Directions to "wear hearing protectors" a typically playful Finnish style, enabling greater enjoyment of design in "seizing the moment" (Vantaa) 20120411 1309 - Vanilla Rockbund
Colleague out of town presented an opportunity for more deeply acquainting with the spouse. Discussed life in Shanghai, the history and status of Finland over the past 25 years, and upcoming options for residencies elsewhere in the world. No alcohol consumed, it's a school night! Venue was trendier than our usual style, the four millennial women at the next table were preoccupied with their mobile phones, and taking selfies. (Vanilla Rockbund, Beijing East Road, Shanghai, PR China) 20180423 - Vanha Kauppahalli
Buying salmon in the same way that Finns have since 1889 when the Old Market Hall opened. Also bought little fried vendace at the next stall, to be used in an appetizer. Saturday afternoon sees a lot of tourist visitors, many eating salmon soup facing out from the renovated stalls to become part of the scenery (Kalakauppa E. Eriksson, Vanha Kauppahalli, Eteläranta, Helsinki, Finland) 20161203 - Vancouver towers northwest
View towards North Vancouver shore from 27th floor balcony looking northwest. Primary view from Hyatt on this trip is west, so urban view wins over nature. (Vancouver) 20120626 0827 - Vancouver International Airport
On way to gate, paused at Vancouver Aquarium 114,000-litre kelp forest exhibit housing marine plants and animals. Scheduled connection of 2h34m shaved down to 75 minutes including a long walk through security gates. Did dine and dash in Maple Leaf Lounge before boarding 11-hour flight. (Vancouver International Airport, British Columbia) 20230925 - Vancouver Harbour North Shore
View off back of the Seabus is better than that out the front, on both directions. Met with DY's friend for lunch in Lonsdale Quay, had a view of workmen painting concrete barriers yellow. Snow on the mountaintops gradually receding in the warm spring sunshine. (Lonsdale Quay from Seabus, Vancouver Harbour, BC) 20180427 - Vancouver Chinatown gate on Pender Street
Dusk comes early in Vancouver, on walk from west to east Pender Street. Noticed more Chinese herbalists in 2 block radius than we have in Toronto. Encountered one of East Side Cultural Crawl sites, artist live/work space on third floor of Main Street building. (Vancouver) 20111120 16:36 - Vancouver Art Gallery, 2nd floor landing
Collection leans towards the conceptual at Vancouver Art Gallery, lots of phenomenology in contemporary and last century works. Tuesday night admission by donation, visited with DY. Photographing art is not permitted, but some building features are scenic (Vancouver, BC) 20111122 1956 - Vancouver Art Gallery
Showing "nothing", #ZhuJinshi (1977) "The Tao of Rice Paper II" sees folds of sheets hanging over bamboo in a floor-to-ceiling installation. The artist sees abstract as really from Western philosophy and aesthetics, not from the Tao of Chinese philosophy. Part of the "Common Language exhibition. (Vancouver Art Gallery, Hornby Street, Vancouver, BC) 20201027 - Vancouver Art Gallery
Alienated by the Euro-Canadian style of the period, #EmilyCarr (1935) "A Rushing Sea of Undergrowth" adopted the expressive power of the forest in a deliberately limited palette of greens and blues. In later reflection, she said that she was interested in the abstraction of #LawrenHarris, but chose to retain her vision of being of nature, rather than next to it. Part of the exhibition of "Rapture, Rhythm and the Tree of Life". (Vancouver Art Gallery, Hornby Street, Vancouver, BC) 20201027 - Vancouver Art Gallery
Neil Campbell (1992/2017) East, a site-specific wall painting dominates visitors walking by. Tuesday night visit unfortunately saw many galleries closed as exhibitions are changing, for an opening later in the week. (Vancouver Art Gallery, Hornby Street, Vancouver, BC) 20171025 - Valleta de Piro
Outer structure of a two-bedroom house unoccupied for some years, renovations are in the plans for the new owners. The land below is terraced, but the vegetation has reverted to the wild, and needs to be managed. On the ridge in the distance, windmills were turning and generating electricity. (Valleta de Piro, La Torre de l'Espanyol, Tarragona, Spain) 20221009 - UWaterloo Env3
Two days @CANSEE Graduate Student Research Symposium, serving as discussant on early stage projects. Invited as a systems sciences lurker in the ecological economics community. (University of Waterloo, Environment 3, Waterloo, Ontario) 20180705
