- King's Cross Station
Atrium ceiling support mesh extends down to ground floor. Illumination bounces light off celling, not much daylight coming in on cloudy London afternoon. Congestion at LHR slowed flight from Athens, medical emergency delayed deplaning, then more than an hour in innovation line. Foresaw fallback train, so stress of waiting is mitigated. (King's Cross Railway Station, London, England) 20151115 - Platia Anagenniseos
Teenagers and skateboarders hanging out after 11 pm in a park in the Kaisariani suburb of Athens, just east of the Acropolis. Town was originally founded in 1922 as a refugee camp for Greeks driven out of Asia Minor. Just south of the University of Athens, the district has become a middle class neighbourhood. The park is ringed by restaurants and shops. (Platia Anagenniseos, Kaisariani, Greece) 20151114 - Yonge and Grenville Streets
Two storey storefronts demolished, foundations for @YCcondos 66 floor glass tower in progress. Intensification of downtown core, a few blocks north of Ryerson University and Yonge-Dundas Square. I don't remember this construction project starting, the warm weather means bicycling more frequently. (462 Yonge Street, Toronto) 20150509 - Boulevard Anspach
On All Saints' Day, exited De Brouckère metro station and started walking south. Looking back northward, surprised to see so many people out enjoying the clear skies on a public holiday, with many large retailers open for commerce. Historically a street built covering the River Senne between 1868 and 1871, it was only in 2012 that the road was closed on Sundays from vehicular traffic, finally become car-free in 2015. Electric scooters seem popular, nimbly weaving around pedestrians. (Boulevard Anspach south of Rue Grétry, Brussels, Belgium) 20211101 - Tabule
Accept invitations when a friend calls to meet for lunch! First met AL when we moved back to Toronto in 1984, and we haven't kept in good contact over the years. Noontime rain showers changed original plans, he suggested a destination in my neighbourhood. (Tabule, Riverside district, Queen Street East, Toronto, Ontario) 20170720 - Aeon Market Granpark
End-of-day clearance take-out sushi in Tokyo supermarket is better than some restaurant food on other side of ocean. Large display of Florida navel oranges is twice the price of local varieties. Full service supermarket is in basement of complex across the street from usual hotel in Shibaura district. Flight to Haneda was delayed by 2 hours, so friends went for dinner without me. (Aeon Market Granpark, Shibaura, Minato, Tokyo) 20160310 - CASCON Day 2 plenary
Plenary @IBMCAS #CASCON describes @SilverHookPower as @ibmiotf exemplar, by Jim Caldwell, in building and managing an IoT solution. The race team gets real-time intelligence, the fans get a better viewer experience, and officials can rapidly ensure the leading competitor has won within rules. James Caldwell presented in his role as Director, IBM Internet of Things, Continuous Engineering Solutions Development. (IBM Centre for Advanced Studies, Cascon, Markham, Ontario) 20151103 - Johnson Pier, Half Moon Bay
Noon is too late to buy fish right off the boat, but signs indicate that regulars must come to the harbor earlier for ultra freshness. (Johnson Pier, Half Moon Bay, California) 20170321 - Toronto Pearson Terminal 1
One destination, two routes. DY on 8 a.m. to New Orleans on way to Denver, I am on 8:30 direct. She's flying on points, saved enough for another trip to Vancouver. I signed up to defer from overbooked flight to later, but UA doesn't need that seat for someone else. (Toronto Pearson Airport, Terminal 1) 20160723 - Mill Street Beer Hall
H2 Harkness-Herriott @MillStBeerHall @TorontoJazzFest Sean Harness guitar @MikeH_trumpet Herriott as duo. No percussion or bass, yet so much music. Imaginative arrangements, no other musicians to hide behind. Early evening show, high stools in middle of beer hall facing west, so fans standing beyond the few seats with a prime view. (Mill Street Beer Hall, Distillery District, Toronto Jazz Festival, Ontario) 20160630 - Dragon City Mall
Snow returns to Toronto on April. Wet cross town to Spadina Chinatown for a casual clan dinner. Still full from yesterday's dinner, fridge full of leftovers. (Dragon City Mall, Chinatown, Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20160403 - Zhangwu Sichuan
Dinner for Qingming Tomb-Sweeping Day, since public holiday on a Monday still has most people off work. Chose Sichuan resto near Tongji University, left half of dishes filled with red peppers too spicy to eat. (Zhangwu Sichuan, Shanghai, PR China) 20170403 - Sky Dragon
Karaoke at Lowkong clan Spring Festival banquet, society elders showing how it's done. Invited friends to join us for the special occasion, as our family now has two sons living and working in remote locations. (Sky Dragon Restaurant, Spadina Chinatown, Toronto) 20160430 - Systems science summit, Wisconsin
Closer to home than #ISSS2015 Berlin, Timothy FH Allen and David Ing, ex-presidents, met to exchange ideas. Small sandbox discussion, could have accommodated more guests for the barbeque. Diana enjoyed watching the horses out back. (Oregon, Wisconsin) 20150731 - Hull U. Centre for Systems Studies
Allenna Leonard on "Stafford Beer's Fifty Years of Applied Epistemology, or What Else Besides the VSM?" A casual talk, starting from the history of operational research. Audio and video recordings captured for online release later. (Hull University Centre for Systems Studies, Cottingham Road, Hull, UK) 20151117
