- Stackt Market
Walls labelled by @franceshilaryhahn (2024) This Side, That Side with two classic beach identical beach chairs for @DesignTOFest. Designed as interactive, the difference comes from the person expressing a preference. Somehow feels wrong to sit on an art object as fragile as summer furniture. (Stackt Market, Bathurst Street, Toronto, Ontariio) 20240127 - Dim Sum King
Spring Festival dinner with the Lowkong Society started with karaoke before the meal was served. During dinner, more karaoke was invited from the audience, drawing a variety of Cantoneese and English lanugage selections. Our family joined in, both with less-than-harmonious vocals and hiphop dancing. (Dim Sum King, Dundas Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20220513 - The Royal Chinese Restaurant
Steam rising off a grouper tofu casserole, minutes after pork belly had arrived. Chinese restautant is further west than Agincourt proper, in a strip mall with fast food options of Japanese, Indian and Mexican cuisines. A 4:30pm dinner is early even for seniors, but after completing appointments and errands, stopping by the apartment would have just led to winter undressing and redressing. (The Royal Chinese Restaurant, Sheppard Avenue East, Scarborough, Ontario) 20240124 - Service Canada Gerrard Square
The good news is that Service Canada treats every individual the same; the bad news is that on the first working day after Christmas, the line can be long. Assisted newcomer with S-1 (not an SW-1) visa obtain a Social Insurance Number, as Government of Canada has improved privileges for students, allowing off-campus work while still enrolled in school. Waited 4 hours standing in line to be assigned a chair in the queue, then 30 minutes to see an official; next time, there's an online booking system for a timed appointment. (Service Canada, Gerrard Square, Toronto, Ontario) 20221228 - Dragon Pearl York Mills
Reservations for 11, lunch choices included turkey, although Asian specialties seemed more popular. Opportunity for grandfather to meet up with family now mostly scattered across Toronto, extended through grandsons marriages. Many trips out to the serving queues, with notable repeat visits to stations for sashimi and for duck. (Dragon Pearl Buffet, York Mills Road, Toronto, Ontario) 20221225 - Fremont Street
Doing cultural anthropology in Las Vegas on a Saturday night. First registered for World of Watson conference, then Viet dinner, fire-breathing praying mantis at Downtown Container Park, and joined the crowds watching zipliners overhead and street performers on the ground. With many people dressed for partying, sometimes hard to separate visitors from vendors. (Fremont Street, Las Vegas, Nevada) 20161022 - Los Gatos
Outlining @The_ISSIP perspective @yassimoghaddam @snousala beyond technology platforms and business model platforms, service ecosystems connected through APIs. Finding some common themes with other conversations today. (Los Gatos, California) 20161025 - MaoKong Tea Master
Tasted a variety of teas from leaves grown at this level and higher. Local preference is for intense flavour, some smokier or fruity or floral. Enjoyed the Maokong gondola ascent, and returned with the glass-bottomed floor. (MaoKong Tea Master, Wenshan District, Taipei City, Taiwan) 20231014 - Centre for Social Innovation Spadina
Special community lunch @csiTO prepared by @NewcomerKitchen, drawing attention to conditions following recent earthquakes in Syria and Turkiye. First speaker direct from Syria a few days ago, spoke about difficulties with cold weather even before the earthquakes. Supporting groups locally in Toronto packing supplies to be airlifted to the region, and doctors reaching out across the ocean. (Centre for Social Innovation, Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20220222 - One York Street
On elevated walkway, just west of bridge northbound to Scotiabank Arena, Banksy (2010) Guard with Baloon Dog was installed in 2017 as part of PATH route. After an early show at The Second City, the family took a scenic stroll, unsuccessfully making all of the right turns to stay inside. Our sons are more familiar with the current nightlife spots than the parents. (One York Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20221203 - Design Exchange
Northern Touch exhibition includes late 1960s Electrohome and Clairtone stereos, all Canadian manufacturing (except for German and English turntables). Enthusiastic guided noontime tour on the last Friday of the month, enlightening visitors on things they may not have known were designed in Canada. Upstairs former Toronto Stock Exchange currently a wide open space, building registered as historic. (Design Exchange, Bay Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20170728 - Costco Scarborough
Not a trip to outer space, but an assessment in a soundproof chamber in a hearing centre. Tympanometry test found eardrums moving as normal. Speech discrimination excellent in right ear and good in left, but tone testing showed moderate to severe slope in hearing loss. A hearing aid would mostly increase volume to make listening easier, but the patient declined for now. (Costco Hearing Centre, Warden Avenue, Scarborough, Ontario) 20230510 - 228 Peace Memorial Park
Monument to remember the February 28 incident in 1947, where thousands of civilians were killed in the suppression of an anti-government uprising. This structure in Taipei is one of many in the country, designed by architect Cheng Tzu-tsai while in prison. Viewed on a long afternoon trek from the National Taiwan Museum to the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial hall. (228 Peace Memorial Park, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan) 20231013 - Edward Gardens
Wedding rings on for the 31st renewal of vows at the original gardens from 1985. Entered the park from the west side of the river, saw the teaching garden with demonstration vegetables for the first time. (Edward Gardens, Don Mills, Ontario) 20160824 - School of Information
Drop-in @snousala on @rjglushko in office, the day before he's leaving for Hawaii. Shirt to match the mood. Last time we met in person was at the dawn of service science. (School of Information, South Hall, University of California Berkeley) 20161026
