- SFO International Terminal
We brought a plane down from Toronto to San Francisco, so that NPI and CL could fly home. Tightly coordinated visits to the Bay Area so that we don't overload all of our California-resident family at the same time. After deplaning, another connection with one automobile headed south on 101 to Sunnyvale, the other going north to Oakland. (SFO International Terminal, San Francisco, California) 20220422 - SFO International Terminal
By door 06, Rufino Tamayo (1983) "Conquest of Space", enamel paint on steel. Mexican painter with first sculpture permanently placed outside of Mexico at age 84. Rigo 23 (1999) "Thinking of Balmy Alley" is a 378x240 inch ceramic type mosaic hanging in the atrium on the wall above the doors to Gate G98. The artist, residing in San Fran, was inspired by a mural (since destroyed) painted in 1993 by the artist and local youth in Balmy Alley, located in San Francisco’s Mission District. This work is lit by daylight through a window to its right. It is part of the collection of the SFO Museum, if travellers will take a moment to look up from their destination-oriented travel. (Gate G98, San Francisco International Airport, California) 20161031 - SFO Gate G94
Porcelain enamel on steel @squeakcarnwath (1999) Fly Flight Fugit. End of a good visit to the Bay Area, DY says that there are still many places to visit beyond the tourist places. (San Francisco International Airport, California). 20190708 - SFO Gate G91
Clare Rojas (2008) Blue Deer, oil and ink on wood, over a usual Air Canada Gate G91 . Flying San Fran to Toronto direct today, originally alongside DY on free ticket via Montreal. Delay to YUL of 25 minutes with a 53 minute connection including immigration would probably miss, so she's on a high probability standby direct, too. Her luggage is checked with me, so it's easy for her to just walk on. (San Francisco International Airport, International Terminal) 20170322 - SFO F gates
I wasn't going to Hawaii, but one gate over were musicians, hula dancers and agents offering macadamia nuts. On the short flight SFO to LAX, the aircraft doesn't even have entertainment screens in the seatbacks. First leg towards home, to meet my sister for a handoff of my father for the return to Toronto. (F gates, San Francisco International Airport, California) 20220502 - SFIA BART Station
Morning arrival at SFO, unexpectedly rainy. Beating traffic through San Fran and over bridges via easy public transportation. Will have experience of Bay Area north for the next few days. (San Francisco International Airport BART station, California) 20161016 - SFI class fishbowl
Inner circle of discussants on systemic design methods, with outer circle of observers who can swap into inner. Smaller group enables richer interaction amongst active participants, questions build amongst students paying attention. (Strategic Foresight and Innovation program, OCAD U., Toronto) 20150319 - Seymour's Pub
Trio #WinstonMatsushita, #WynstonMinckler, #ToddStewart in casual north shore venue. Pianist had studied jazz at UToronto, moved back home to Vancouver. Small group of music enthusiasts separated from clientele more interested in big screen sports or socializing. (Seymour's Pub and Grill, Lillooet Road, North Vancouver, BC) 20201029 - Seven bags of herbs from Siang Ye Tang
Traditional Chinese Medicine prescribed 7 bags of herbs, to be boiled and drunken over the next 7 days. Symptoms of heat, dryness, lower mental acuity. Unusual directions to come back next week for more herbs, as my head has been hot over the past month. Decoction to be prepared under range hood, but house will smell Chinese for a while (Chinatown East, Toronto) 20131229 1604 - Service Canada Gerrard Square
The good news is that Service Canada treats every individual the same; the bad news is that on the first working day after Christmas, the line can be long. Assisted newcomer with S-1 (not an SW-1) visa obtain a Social Insurance Number, as Government of Canada has improved privileges for students, allowing off-campus work while still enrolled in school. Waited 4 hours standing in line to be assigned a chair in the queue, then 30 minutes to see an official; next time, there's an online booking system for a timed appointment. (Service Canada, Gerrard Square, Toronto, Ontario) 20221228 - Service Canada Centre Scarborough Town Centre
In-person visit, suggested after telephone call inquiry about not receiving letter about Canadian Dental Care qualifying for over-87 years of age in December 2023. One of multiple eldercare errands in the neighbourhood, the time required for the beneficiary to answer questions seems less than time it takes for the customer service to figure out the case on the computer. Helpful Service Canada agent explained she could handle everything except Canada Revenue Agency, and the public-facing websites are actually partitioned. (Service Canada Centre, Town Centre Court, Scarborough, Ontario) 20240417 - Serano Bakery
Family-run Greek neighbourhood bakery, for crusty whole wheat bread and taramasalata. An exercise destination, biking uphill in below-freezing weather, past two artisanal bakeries who offer products at twice the price. Large store with sweets for dessert. Will sample with family at dinner tonight, and judge whether we'll become repeat customers. (Serano Bakery, East York, Ontario) 20151228 - Seoul National University Museum of Art
Long bus ride south to visit university art collection in building designed by Rem Koolhass circa 2005. Works exhibited seem to tell stories that may not be appreciated by visitors outisde of Korean culture, some reminders that we're in a Christian country. Hilly journey revealed large campus in the midst of forest, reflecting 21st century rise of Korean economy. (SNU MoA | Seoul National University Museum of Art, Gwanak-gu, Seoul, South Korea) 20230927 - Seor Ak San
Family Day leisure for Korean cuisine. Decided on Chinatown district, first restaurant choice was queued up, went to strong alternative for a change of pace. Sons assessed quality as better than equivalents in Beijing, where they ate a lot of food in this style. (Seor Ak San, Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20160120
