- Austrian Airlines Toronto to Vienna
Just realised that I'm breaking my personal rule to fly across oceans on a carrier with a Canadian flag. Direct flight for short trip trumped brand preference. Fortunately, the Austrians aren't known as an aggressive culture. I expect to nap, and wake up in Vienna. (OS 72, still boarding at Pearson International Airport YYZ) 20150702 - Sketinghuish 1, 2, 3
Installation by Sket One, in L.A. Heat exhibit, Chinese American Museum. Painting by Audrey Chan in background. (Olvera Street, Los Angeles) - Centennial Park Conservatory
Open on Christmas Day, indoor greenhouse of exotic plans is operated by City of Toronto on northwestern edge of municipality crosstown. Season features poinsettias, with a pair of cardinals taking residency in the warmth escaping winter temperatures. Pond central in the building seems to be missing koi, the fish have been moved or were hiding. (Centennial Park Conservatory, Elmhurst Road, Etobicoke, Ontario) 20231225 - Rol San
Sunday dim sum with family and friends in Spadina Chinatown. Someone at the table should have a 10 hour jet lag recovery, and it's not me. (Rol San, Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20160424 - Visual Arts Building, U. Iowa
Striking central atrium with ramps spiralling multiple levels upward. Arts installations still in progress, with end of term nearing. Walking tour of campus on a clear spring day. (Visual Arts Building, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa) 20170502 - Trudeau Airport
Not yet in Brussels, French language announcements on terminal. Brief stop in Montreal, booked loose connection so no stress on flight departing late. Moose, hockey and maple syrup are enduring symbols for Canada. (Trudeau Airport, Montreal, Quebec) 20150922 - PLoP plenary
Introduction to Writers' Workshop approach by Richard Gabriel as a more teacher-like, in the library at the Allerton Park Retreat Center for Pattern Languages of Programs Conference 2014 - DePaul Art Museum
Along 2 walls, Amber Ginsburg and Aaron Hughes (2022) Tea Project, from the 780 porcelain Styrofoam teacups cast for each individual currently or previously imprisoned in Guantánamo camp. Detainees were allowed only Styrofoam cups, on which they inscribed Arabic poems and flowers. Serious topic comes with debriefing notes from the university, if the exhibition of Remaking the Exceptional, Tea, Torture, and Reparations becomes overwhelming. (DePaul Art Museum, West Fullerton Avenue, Chicago, Illinois) 20220713 - SIEYP panel
Post #ISIE2015 panel #SIEYP2015 Symposium on Industrial Ecology for Young Professionals looks forward on directions for research. Audience of over 100 graduate students and postdocs could shape the future of the field. Panel includes: Reid Lifset (Yale U.), Ming Xu (U. Michigan), Chris Davis (U. Groningen), Noa Meron (Tel Aviv U.), Weslynne Ashton (IIT), Megha Shenoy (independent, India), Chris Kennedy (U. of Toronto). Afternoon will have self-organizing groups for discussion. (Lecture Block, Stag Hill campus, University of Surrey, Guildford, UK) 20150711 - Playter Estates
Salon hosted by @redesign + @playthink, in advance of systemic design conference in a few weeks that will be centered in Delft, across the Atlantic Ocean. More social than topical, amongst colleagues who haven't met in person in many months. As with many parties, everyone ends up in the kitchen. (Playter Estates, Toronto, Ontario) 20211016 - Mount Pleasant Cemetery
Additional visit to graves, with brother and sister coming into town. The tree that we stood under on a previous visit has its top either broken off or chopped off. Extra time was spent on removing flowers that had overgrown, hiding the headstone. After a visit to Pine Hills Cemetery earlier, I took a nap in the car. (Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario) 20160717 - St. Salvador Cathedral
Song Dong installation @TriennaleBrugge "Wu Wei Er Wei” or “Doing Nothing Doing" is a miniature mountain landscape, made of windows recovered from a demolished neighbourhood in Beijing. One in a series of contemporary art pieces scattered around the medieval town of Bruges, which had its golden age between the 12th and 15th century. (St. Salvador Cathedral, Bruges, West Flanders, Belgium) 20150928 - Place Dumon
Shopping for artisinal white boudin (pork sausage with raisins) and black boudin (blood sausage with truffles) at the Saturday market, amongst the larger variety of vendors than Tuesdays or Fridays. Walked by more stands to find Chinese cabbage, and then looked into the "dead bird" store with partridge and quail in the window. (Place Dumon, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Brussels. Belgium) 20211106 - Nippori Zakuro
Uzbeki food expected from online reviews, sitting on the floor and eating from dishes served on low table was not. Well prepared food was enjoyed, unlimited quantity lunch wasn't tested. Waitress accommodated requests to avoid dairy ingredients. Welcome surprise of Oriental, not Asian cuisine, in Tokyo. (Zakuro. Nippori Village, Tokyo, Japan) 20170325 - Princess of Wales Theatre
Fan zone with security guards keeping order, yet no movie stars in sight near the main screening room of the Toronto International Film Festival. Nearby financial institutions and Metro Hall running business as usual, relatively unimpacted by the inconvenience. (Princess of Wales Theatre, King Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20170911
