- USF Cowell Hall
Presented paper at #puarl2016 conference in one of four parallel tracks. Audience ranged from newcomers to the body of work, through to a coauthor with Christopher Alexander of the original 1971 A Pattern Language book. About 100 attendees at this conference. USF is still lively on a Saturday with singing and music competing in the main room through a thin room partition wall. (Cowell Hall, University of San Francisco, California) 20161029 - Why join the navy when you can be a pirate
Enthusiastic students, after Friday course completion, picked a bar with name quoted from Steve Jobs. Actually, it's a cafe that serves alcoholic drinks, mixed juices and smoothies. At 5 p.m., some of the clientele still had laptop computers open, and were tapping away as the sound levels rose. (Why join the navy when you can be a pirate, Annankatu, Helsinki, Finland) 20160219 - Restaurant Bokstas
Social evening for @ktuin4act faculty, many convened for research evalution exercise, others for Industry 5.0 book project. Relaxed conversation with many members travelling from other EU universities, comparing careers and living across in different cities. Menu listed choice of scorpionfish, known as a most dangeroous meal due to poisonous spines, subsequently changed to a whitefish indigenous to the Baltics. (Restaurant Bokstas, Kęstučio gatvė, Kaunas, Lithuania) 20220329 - Ravintola Jing Cheng
Chinese cuisine executed well, but recipe lacking in green vegetables may be preferred by Nordic clientele. Venue convenient to the apartment where I'm staying, but local foods and cooking by my own hands are superior. Met with once-removed acquaintance, exchange perspectives on dual careers in academia and commercial practice. (Kiinalainen Ravintola Jing Cheng, Töölö, Helsinki, Finland) 20160211 - 36 Lisgar Street
Moderating the White Elephant Holiday Potluck, with attendees contributing gifts to the pool. Each then drew a sequence to choose an unwrapped gift, or steal the gift of a prior selector. Good opportunities for catching up with friends, starting at 4pm and running through 11pm. (36 Lisgar Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20221230 - Brick oven
Custom-made pizza in only a few minutes, when the fire is already hot. Friday afternoon at 3:30, bakery wasn't busy, so a good destination for a casual business meeting. Strudel and cookies for dessert, could have brought fresh bread home. Chose location so that friend could beat traffic from city centre to the east end, he dropped me off for the westbound subway. (Calabria Bakery, Midland Avenue, Scarborough, Ontario) 20151106 - Canadian National Exhibition grounds
Shrine Peace Memorial presented in 1930 to Canada by Shriners, with 1958 surrounding fountain and gardens created by Toronto Parks Department. Faces Lake Shore Boulevard, southeast of the Bandshell and southwest of the Better Living Centre. I've been going to the CNE since the 1960s, and this fountain was never on the route between sights. The Shell Tower is in the background. CNE is only really active in the last 2 weeks of August. (Shrine Peace Memorial, Canadian National Exhibition grounds, Toronto, Ontario) 20160707 - Dim Sum King
Summer Systems Conferences Debriefings planned outdoors for Grange Park were driven inside due to rain. Round table was a good configuration for comments and questions, but food arriving and active acoustics were distracting. Inclined to return to online meeting for next month. (Dim Sum King, Dundas Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20220808 - Chef 88 Oriental Cuisine
Full table of 10, with family dinner coordinated with arrivals from the south. Previous day travel from Woodstock NY by sister and husband via automobile, and son #4 via airplane. Catching up on news, maybe another opportunity later in the week. (Chef 88 Oriental Cuisine, Kennedy Road, Scarborough, Ontario) 20220807 - The Power Plant
Installation @ThePowerPlantTO #FranzErhardWalther #CalltoAction fabrics stacked on floor and on wall isn't activated with human interaction as intended, and shown in videos. Works include the red "The New Alphabet, Form G" (1993), "First Work Set" (1963-69) and "Yellow Moulding" (1985). Maybe we could schedule play days with art. (The Power Plant, Harbourfront Centre, Toronto, Ontario) 20160826 - LACMA
Claes Oldenbery (1967) "Giant Pool Balls" on floor, with John McCracken (1967) "Don't Tell Me When to Stop" and Ellsworth Kelly (1972) "Blue Curve III" on the wall behind, in the Ahmanson Building, level 2. Leisurely stroll through galleries with brother, talking while walking. Collection much broader than contemporary art, so focused on primary interest. (Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, California) 20160226 - Architecture and Design Gallery
In lower level of building, Asinnajaq + Tiffany Shaw (2022) Nuna is printed fabric draped over maple dowels in a structure like a home with fewer walls, so that the occupant could read a book or watch a screen, and the sunshine and brush of wind aren't blocked. A steel hearth Asinnajaq + Ludovic Boney + Tiffany Shaw (2022) Qulliqu has a neon flame. In the background, larger than life projection of aboriginal women in conversations. (Architecture and Design Gallery, Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landsccape and Design, University of Toronto, Spadina Circle, Toronto, Ontario) 20240110 - Riverside neighbourhood
Delivery of new double bed for the new year, ordered online on Boxing Day sale. Had previously tried out store model in person, referred by salesman towards a firm old-style bed like they used to make. Not a fan of the pillow top style that we had brought down from Gravenhurst in 2019, when we were closing out the store. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20230104 - St. Michael's Health Centre
Riding elevator up from the 3rd floor Family Practice Unit up to the 8th floor Eye Clinic. Purposefully double booked appointments, as previous ophthalmologist visits have included dilations before exams, this including wait time for droid to take effect. Bonus, as medical student offered flu shot, saving trip to mass inoculations. When wait times are predictable, van be efficient. (St. Michael's Health Centre, 61 Queen Street East, Toronto) 20151020 - Justina M. Barnicke Gallery
Hanging from the wall, #TimWhiten (2014) Hallelujah I is horizontal lilac branches with an umbrella handle suspended into vertical branches, gallery lighting casting shadows down. Part of the The Performance of Shadows exhbition, in the bridging of material and spiritual experiences. Not at this show is (2015) Hallelujah II that looks similar, with a glass cane instead of the umbrella handle. (Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Hart House, University of Toronto) 20231125
