- Yonge-Dundas Square
Labour Day early evening, no formal events, but buskers draw their own audience. Crowds dissipated a few minutes later, with another performer announcing the next show. Stores mostly closed, many restaurants dark in celebration of labour. (Yonge-Dundas Square, Toronto) 20150907 - Yonge Street, north of St. Clair Ave.
View north from midtown on a clear winter day, beyond Deer Park to the west and Mount Pleasant Cemetery to the east. Beyond the Beltline Trail bridge, urban density increases with concrete towers. (Yonge Street, north of St. Clair Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20171220 - Yonge Street at Yorkville Avenue
Facades of heritage 1870s-1890s Yonge Street buildings (John Oram, #836; Moses Staunton, #838-844; James Weir, #846-848A; Charles Frogley, #850) are being preserved as incorporated into a luxury 58-storey glass and steel tower at 1 Yorkville under construction. The storefronts are empty. In the lot behind, there's a big pit with construction machines digging. Neighbourhood was quiet on a Saturday when festivals were drawing crowds elsewhere. (1 Yorkville Avenue at Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20160611 - Yonge and Grenville Streets
Two storey storefronts demolished, foundations for @YCcondos 66 floor glass tower in progress. Intensification of downtown core, a few blocks north of Ryerson University and Yonge-Dundas Square. I don't remember this construction project starting, the warm weather means bicycling more frequently. (462 Yonge Street, Toronto) 20150509 - Yonge and Dundas
Scramble crosswalk gives 20 seconds to clear intersection around 10:20pm on a Thursday night in July. City is still active with pedestrians on a weekday, will be busier on the weekend. Heat alert during the day, so a late night bike ride still warm in midsummer. (Yonge Street at Dundas Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20160721 - Yohachi Sushi
Leisurely dinner catching up on more than 5 years since we've seen each other. They're more retired than us, all of us are in the sandwich generation of taking care of elders, and having adult children with busy lives. Conversation ran overtime, so that we waited for the late Seabus schedule of 30 minutes rather daytime 15 minute crossings. (Yohachi Sushi Japanese Restaurant, Esplanade West, North Vancouver, BC) 20240328 - Yoda Fountain
Sought out obscure installation on the campus of Industrial Light and Magic, at the northeast corner of the Presidio lands. Happened across the Skywalker Room, as we wandered about the site. Relaxed day hopping around the city, from SoMa, Marina, Presidio, Sutro Baths, and Sunset. (Yoda Fountain, Letterman Drive, San Francisco) 20190705 - Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
Tom Sachs (2007) Apollo LEM as part of YBCA Space Program Europa exhibition. A short distraction late on Sunday afternoon, before walk and dinner in Chinatown. Tomorrow making the jump back into Eastern Time at home. (Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Mission Street, Dan Francisco, California) 20161030 - Yerba Buena
Partition wall sees Future Farmers (2018) "Oar Trade" blades threaded through ports. Baltimore floorboards inlaid into Seattle house, then extracted Seattle floorboards shaped into art objects. This contemporary art show was more conceptual than usual, a lot of documentaries to watch. (Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Mission Street, San Francisco, California) 20180516 - Yen Ching
Mixed research agenda with social, at intercept dinner after driving 11 protracted hours from Toronto. Discussed release of paper on -Calvin Pava's Legacy: Sociotechnical Systems Design for the 'Digital Coal Mines'", and histories leading up to its writing. Spouses had parallel conversation on less academic pursuits. (Yen Ching Restaurant, E. Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN) 20180808 - Yangdian Taoist Temple
Upper and lower level rooms each house one or more deities representing a variety of qualities, ringing two large buildings in the courtyard centre. Gate fee gave me a bundle of joss sticks, I followed the cue of others to light them, bow four directions, and then stand the sticks up in an urn of ashes. Musicians playing, priests chanting, echoing through the large compound. (Royal Qinci Yangdian Taoist Temple, Pudong, Shanghai, P R China) 20170408 - Yamate Dori gate, Shinagawa-ku
Unexpected wooden gate at west end of main street, just northeast of Shimbamba station. Wayfaring for a new art gallery, routed through Shinagawa station, intending on train 2 stops south, but mistakenly got trapped on the express service to Haneda Airport. Rode circle back and used smartphone to navigate through a tidy neighbourhood, definitely few non-residents in the area. (Yamate Dori gate, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan) 20170330 - Yael Bensoussan duo, Segal Centre
Vocals in French, plus guitar. Said she learned songs sung by her mother washing dishes. Introduced with alternate career as a second year medical student at U. of Montreal. Part of the Women of the World series at the Segal Centre, opening for Coral Egan (Montreal) 20120126 2007 - Xpace Cultural Centre
Art installation @sangminl (2019) How to Fix a Broken Home, fills project space @xpacecc . Subtle East Asian influences with bananas of varying ripeness, large bags of rice, and Bart and Marge Simpson with bright yellow skin. Wooden frame with a pitched roof outlines the larger context, we view from the outside. (Xpace Cultural Centre, Lansdowne Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20190720 - Xpace Cultural Centre
In solo show @arezustudio (2019) Fortune Flavors the Bold @xpacecc, artist fills room with good luck symbols inspired by growing up with a mother who immigrated from Hong Kong. Second generation children typically lose their heritage language, so the appreciation of the distant culture comes only indirectly. Sign at the door welcomes visitors in, provided shoes are removed, which mirrors a custom in Chinese homes. (Xpace Cultural Centre, Lansdowne Avenue, Brockton Village, Toronto, Ontario) 20190126
