- Main Street, Ames, Iowa
On street corner, Steve Reddell (2022) Riding High sculpture on a hot August day. Opted to enjoy ice cream inside the shop, and visit the bookstore with air conditioning. Drove around the Iowa State University campus, with signs that classes start tomorrow. (Main Street at Douglas Avenue, Ames, Iowa) 20230820 - Zhang Liang Spicy Hotpot
Pre-theatre casual dinner, each diner selecting own ingredients from the open refrigerator shelves to be given to kitchen to make soup. Unlike our experience in China where only malatang means numbing spicy soup, our Cantonese palates could opt for the non-spicy mushroom broth. Some have had more experience estimating the quantity of inputs, to the amount one can eat. (Zhang Liang Spciy Hotpot, Dundas Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20240320 - Bentway Studio
Street furniture #MichaelLeePoy (2022) Moko Jumbie design has a mandoria of two intersecting congruent circles, representing eyeballs. Practice of balancing on stilts for the West African masquerade (mas) tradition in Afro-Caribbean communities calls for stepped tiers that afford seating, mounting and training. Further west are apartment towers of the CityPlace planned neighbourhood, filling over over the past 10 years. (Bentway Studio, Fort York Boulevard, CityPlace, Toronto, Ontario) 20220813 - Edward Gardens
Annual tradition of revisiting the fountain and renewing our vows, with a rare occasion to have all four sons in town at the same time, with grandfather. Reversed order to have dinner earlier, and then stroll around the gardens before dusk. Noted that we will lose our photographer from the past few years, as an official marriage means she should be included in future years. (Edward Gardens, Lawrence Avenue East, Don Mills, Ontario) 20220824 - Tinuno Downtown
Satisfied a sense of adventure for two experienced globetrotters by dining on kamayan (Filipino boodle fight) with hands in plastic gloves and no serving utensils. Snagged outdoor patio table, that servers covered with banana leaves, spreading garlic rice then topped with squid, shrimp, fish, mussels and pork. Guests had a tiring drive around the lake from Rochester, should have have a good night's rest before the in-person Systems Thinking Ontario meeting next evening. (Tinuno, Howard Strreet, Toronto, Ontario) 20230813 - Roncesvallles Avenue
Thankful to an honest anonymous Torontonian who turned in my lost wallet at a bank branch, cross town. I only noticed the missing item on Sunday night, after biking back from Spadina Chinatown, home. Teller phoned me after tracing a credit card. I have already requested replacements, and gotten temporary ID issued. (RBC Royal Bank, Roncesvalles Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20220824 - Pape Village
Family dinner backyard BBQ extended with adopted uncles, reflecting on the recent wedding. Reminisced of early days hosting the sons when the parents went on vacation to London. Grilled burgers, chicken and vegetables, alongside Japanese curry with rice. (Pape Villiage, Broadview Avenue, East York Ontario) 20220809 - Pappajohn Sculpture Park
In foreground, Yayoi Kusama (2014 design, 2018 fabrication) Pumpkin (L) represents a form of radiant energy. In background, Tony Smith (started 1962, completed 1981) Marriage originally didn't have the opening visibile in three-quarter view, so the top box was made 2 feet longer. Late Sunday afternoon, few visitors to the park in rising summer temperatures. (Pappajohn Sculpture Park, Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa) 20230820 - Canoe Landing Park
Four times normal life size @DougCoupland (2009) Tom Thomson's Canoe is at southwest corner of park, elevated above the height of the elevated Gardiner Expressway to the south. The bright red sculpture outer structure rests on concrete, made of steel and resin sufficiently durable for children to climb on top. A wall of condominium towers partitions the city from Toronto Harbour beyond. (Canoe Landing Park, Gardiner Expressway, CityPlace, Toronto, Ontario) 20220813 - Woodstock OnRoute Service Centre
Oasis at 11:30pm Monday night barely has Tim Hortons open, with no other EV drivers lounging. Charging station posted with 150kWh capacity is pushing 45 kWh. This should be stop #5 of 5, we expect to arrive in Toronto after 2am ET, having left Fairfield Iowa at 7:00am CT. (OnRoute Service Centre, Highway 401 eastbound, Woodstock, Ontario) 20230821 - Centre for Social Innovation Annex
Book Launch for Strategy to Action by @kdemming interviewed by @tonyasurman at Six Degrees event @csitoronto. History of coming from Trinidad to work at @sigeneration, and then getting two endorsements for PhD to enter @OISEUofT. Most challenging question could be: what is the strategy for raising your child (who was present). (Centre for Social Innovation Annex, Bathurst Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20240229 - Noryangjin Seafood Market
On open public space on 5th floor, #YiChangSub (2015) Full of Blue Light is polycarbonate little fish on a stee frame outlining a whale. Sculpture celebrates the 2000 employees and mechants in the building below. Mid-morning walk saw retail section in the east part and the wholesalers in the west part, but it was too early for most restaurants to be open. (Noryangjin Seafood Market, Dongjak-gu, Seoul, South Korea) 20230927 - Edwards Gardens
Annual ritual repeated for the 38th time, we reflected on a busy year packed with family activities. Discreet change of angle on the fountain, to hide the yellow tape around the pit dug behind. Attended by a single son, we appreciate the regular event can get bumped by overbooking. (Edward Gardens, Lawrence Avenue East, Don Mills, Ontario) 20230824 - Mr. Congee Bridlewood Mall
Followng late afternoon appointments, opted for a casual Cantonese meal at a mall storefront. Congee, beef brisket lo mein, turnip cake and barbeque pork rice at modest prices, whole duck cost a little more. Selection is small, save for the seafood set menus the would suit a grander occasion. (Mr. Congee Bridlewood Mall, Warden Avenue, Scarborough, Ontario) 20240313 - Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge, International
Arrived 3h45 minutes before flight to Madrid, after driving in local traffic in rush hour from Scarborough 1h40m. Long queue in priority check-in, followed by diversion from E gate entrance to D gate queues, then crossing back across airport to international gates. Travel for academic meeting has a last minute extension for university lectures, we're happy to be in person rather than online. (Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge, International, Pearson Airport, Toronto, Ontario) 20220929
