Lightning talks at GTALUG Greater Toronto Area Linux User Group are being recorded on video. First time attending, I offered to talk for 5 minutes on Desktop Environments, followed by 5 minutes for questions. Others are technically deeper. Linux isn't my full time job, but I've spent the past 10 years of my life using it. (George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre, Ryerson University, Church Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20170711 - University of Toronto Art Centre
Inside a glsss case, Barbara-Ann Watso (2009) Panier de Marriage [Marriage Basket] woven of ash splints and sweetgrass. Historically, Abenaki Basket-Making Industry flourished 1870–1920, by the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. Baskets continue to be part of the Abenaki tradition passed down through generations, as the community has migrated along the Saint-François River, extending from Quebec into Maine. (University of Toronto Art Centre, University College, University of Toronto) 20231125 - E Randolph Street at N. Columbus Drive
On @chiarchitecture walking tour, looking north to @studiogang skyscapers Aqua (2009) tower with irregularly shaped balconies, and Vista (2020) blue-green three towers with 83rd floor void space so that wind effects more safely blow through. Excellent docent Bill covered Must See Chicago route in 90 minutes, more walking than other focused tours. First in a series of guided excursions of the Windy City. (E. Randolph Street at N. Columbus Drive, Chicago, Illinois) 20220712 - Lalibela
Ethiopian injera on platter with veggies, then grilled beef and lamb on top, and two deep fried fish on the side. No cutlery, this Mother's Day dinner was eaten with our fingers. Confirmed that the meal was gluten-free, the injera is made from teff. (Lalibela, Danforth Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20170514 - Dinner for systems thinking
Informal gathering, visiting guest anticipating Systems Thinking Ontario tomorrow night. Experimental fish soup with fuzzy melon and enoki mushrooms, then Chinese beef stew with daikon. Conversation shifted to American politics, then organization of system communities. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20150517 - SDM Lake Share Blvd E.
In left shoulder, 7th Covid vaccination (Pfizer BioNTech Comirnaty XBB.1.5), then in right shoulder, annual flu vaccination (Standard-dose quadrivalent (QIV), either FluLaval Tetra or Fluzone Quadrivalent)). Routine injection by pharmacist with booked appointment, no ill effects later in the day. Bike over to this pharmacy branch, because the one in walking distance from our home is booked into next week. (Shoppers Drug Mart, Lake Shore Blvd E., Toronto) 20231124 - Sky Dragon
BBQ meat appetiser plate starts Harvest Moon Festival dinner with the Lowkong Society. Saturday night is unusual, as sons usually get invited on Sunday nights after grandfather's monthly board meetings. Table has clear window view of the rooftop terrace, attracting only the occasional smoker. (Sky Dragon Restaurant, Spadina Chinatown, Toronto) 20150919 - Shirin Kebab House
Meeting over Turkish pide and veal-lamb doner wrap in casual suburban diner. Ground beef pide is cheeseless recipe, and this is one of three places in the city serving it. Neighbourhood clientele includes toddlers. (Shirin Kebab House, Golden Mile, Scarborough, Ontario) 20160513 - 6th Ave. At 53rd St.
NYC food trucks, customers dining al fresco, street performer fiddling, late afternoon with a March chill. Around the corner from the Museum of Modern Art, where we saw the new new Bjork Black Lake video installation, 2 facing screens, 49 speakers on walls and ceiling. (New York City) 20150324 - Fitting hands at the Chinese Theatre
Sizing up to Samuel L. Jackson in concrete in front of the Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Usual crowds, even on July 4. - Propeller Art Gallery
Elements of Nature show #RuthMaude @encaustic_art (2023) Four Elements #1-12 has small encaustic pantings arranged four rows by three columns. Unsure whether the themes, top to bottom, are fire, water, sky and ground. Noticed a little red dot beside the upper right painting, could mean that this set may not again be seen together as a collection. (Propeller Art Gallery, Abell Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20231116 - Duo Music Exchange
Piano-driven instrument rock by Schroeder Headz had audience bouncing in time, and waving right hands. Pianist Shunsuke Watanabe had extended pattern between songs, entertaining audience with humour. Japanese audience was more subdued with opening act ADAM At. Venue had excellent sound, no seats. We didn't stay for third band on bill, Sono Sukimakara. (Duo Music Exchange, Dogenzaka, Shibuya, Tokyo) 20160311 - Jonathan Ashbridge Park
Midday Sunday farmer's market @LeslieMarket, second last weekend for the fall. Discovered that the listing of "Ashbridge Park" meant 'Jonathan Ashbridge Park" off Queen St. E., not "Ashbridge Bay Park" off Lakeshore Blvd. E. Extra urban bicycling for exercise on a cool sunny day. (Jonathan Ashbridge Park, Queen Street East, Toronto) 20151025 - Greek hot table
Old style casual dining has moved north up Pape Avenue. Cooks on open kitchen behind warming trays including specials of the day, in continual Greek conversation. Sunday lunch away from the crowds, and so much food that we took half of it home. Must be a neighbourhood institution, as guests are asked whether they'll be dining in our taking out. (The Greek Grill, East York, Toronto) 20150913 - Stainless steel sculpture and fountain
William Pye (1969) "Narcissus", with spray of water on west side of small lake in northeast Stag Hill campus. Terrain at university is scenic but hilly, signs posted that accessibility may lead to indirect routes. British summer morning is cool, wearing long pants in anticipation of afternoon rain.
