On 1985 acquisition Francois Fleischbein (1837) Free Woman of Color, local conservator determined funny lace collar and bow were not original, and painted over without authorization. In 2016, another conservator examined and discovered collar and bow had been overpainted rather than removed. In 2017, a new conservator uncovered these features to restore to original appearance.
