Acquired by U. Iowa only 3 years after its completion, Max Beckmann (1943) Karneval (Carnival) depicts masked festivities of revelry before the Christian period of atonement known as Lent. The German artist had been removed from a teaching position in 1933 by the Third Reich, emigrating to Amsterdam. The three-panel format associated with devotional paintings addresses human behaviour metaphorically. (Stanley Museum of Art, West Burlington Street, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa) 20250412
