- New Bilan
Somalian lunch with friendly chef. Short menu of 5 meat and fish choices, ordered one of each, enjoyed as a group: goat meat, chicken steak, chicken stew, king fish, beef stew. Chicken soup with spices had us guessing flavours. Five platters came with rice, we ordered chipatti bread extra, arriving hot to the the table. Casual restaurant not frequented by tourists slightly east of downtown, unconventional choice for Sunday lunch (New Bilan Restaurant, Dundas Street East, Toronto) 20160117 - Frankfurt Airport Terminal A
Mobile installation in atrium of popular hub for flights across Europe. Now morning daylight, arrival was dark on overnight trans-Atlantic leg. On time schedule and loose connection have enough time for shower and leisurely breakfast in Senator Lounge. Stiffness and dull headache chills be treated, but first have to sit on another plane for a free hours. (Frankfurt Airport, Terminal A, Germany) 20160131 - Hellsten Parliament
Arrived at Helsinki apartment for 3-week stay. Smaller room, just the basics for me. Teaching 2 days per week, a few other meetings, but lots of opportunities to visit with friends. (Museokatu, Helsinki, Finland) 20160131 - Kiinalainen Uusivuosi
Lantern dance at 10th Chinese New Year festival in Helsinki. Program of dancers, musicians and kung fu ran throughout Sunday afternoon to usher in the Year of the Monkey. With the foggy day persistent after sunset, the fireworks over nearby Töölönlahti seemed to explode low altitude for a public show. (Keskuskatu, Helsinki, Finland) 20160107 - S Market
Displays of Karelian pies prepared commercially in large quantities are indicative of Finnish palates. Wheat pastry with topping of rice and egg butter is a light savoury snack, tasty, wholesome and inexpensive. Many times, I have eaten these directly after checkout, to tide over the appetite before getting back to the apartment to prepare dinner. Homemade would likely be better, but economically uncompetitive. (S Market, Mannerheimentie, Helsinki, Finland) 20160214 - Pearson Terminal 1
Passenger volume to U.S. flights heavy on Sunday morning 7 a.m., but lines are moving. Full staff on at Air Canada check-in, lots of automated passport reading machines, backlog mostly at x-ray scanners. Warm weather in Toronto, so travellers expecting to escape chilly temperatures booked a while ago. (Toronto Pearson Airport, Terminal 1) 20160221 - Lake Mead
AC1851 on approach east of Las Vegas, with scenic view of the Mojave Desert, fresh water fed by Colorado River. Lake Mead National Recreation Area is in Red Rock Country, a high sierra, at the Nevada-Arizona border. Flew over Bonelli Landing, view north to Echo Bay. (Air Canada flight 1851, over Lake Mead National Recreation Area) 20160221 - ANA Lounge, Haneda International Terminal
Curry rice, chicken karage, fried noodles quite standard. Hot and sour soup a funny Japanese thin variety. Haven't tried udon noodle bar. Buffet low on food with fibre, no fruit. Late night flying westbound into Asia. I will be back in 6 days, on connection eastbound home. (ANA Lounge. Haneda Airport International Terminal, Tokyo, Japan) 20160313 - Torpedo Factory Art Center
Mobiles of wooden geese flying in chaos, viewed from third floor hanging in stairwell down into second floor. The complex of working artists studios in a former munitions factory had great variety, for a cold rainy day on the west bank of the Potomac River. (Torpedo Factory Art Center, Alexandria, Virginia) 20160320 - Ashbridges Bay
Sailboats still covered for winter, as spring tries to emerge on cool Easter Sunday. Lots of pedestrians and bicyclists in the park, winter fences on the beaches still up. Eastbound pedalling into headwind, warmed up on way back, peeled off winter gear. (Ashbridges Bay, Toronto, Ontario) 20160527 - Dragon City Mall
Snow returns to Toronto on April. Wet cross town to Spadina Chinatown for a casual clan dinner. Still full from yesterday's dinner, fridge full of leftovers. (Dragon City Mall, Chinatown, Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20160403 - Rol San
Sunday dim sum with family and friends in Spadina Chinatown. Someone at the table should have a 10 hour jet lag recovery, and it's not me. (Rol San, Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20160424 - Pine Hills Cemetery
Lighting hell money and incense on visiting mom's gravesite, adjacent to the annual Lowkong clan convening at the monument. Dad had visited earlier on the anniversary, by himself. Only 3 of us in Toronto this weekend, we all continued on to Mount Pleasant to see both grandparents, afterwards. (Pine Hills Cemetery, Scarborough, Ontario) 20160522 - Backyard barbeque
Grilling chuanr chicken + lemongrass pork for Memorial Day weekend, which isn't really a holiday weekend north of the border. Seasonings made by hand. Barbeque needed maintenance, with a new replacement part. (Riverside district, Toronto, Ontario) 20160529 - Robarts Library
Eleventh floor stacks, with triangular window bays protruding out facing Sussex Street. My alumnus card still gives me access to the stacks to old books, including one older than my attending university. Biked cross town, got caught in torrential downpour in the last five minutes, so entered the building dripping water. (Roberts Library 11th floor, University of Toronto, St. George Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20160605.
