- Cape Sounion
Ruins of the Temple of Poseidon, built circa 440 B.C. Southeast from Athens, A.L. first through eastern small towns, and then along the scenic coastal highway by the Aegean Sea to the end of the peninsula. Perfect day for sightseeing, 24 degrees and sunny, unusual for November. Only a few tourists visiting, so mostly a silent vista of the sea and islands, and time to decompress. (Temple of Poseidon, Cape Sounion, Greece) 20151113 - Toronto Public Library, Queen Saulter Branch
Neighbourhood walk to pick up book and DVD, chest cold having discouraged leaving the house in a week. Neo-classical building was designed by E.J. Lennox, serving as Postal Station G from 1914 to 1975. Renovated in 1979, the library and community centre is a landmark in South Riverdale. (Toronto Public Library, Queen Saulter Branch, 765 Queen Street East, Riverside district, Toronto) 20170114 - Heliconian Hall
Calm Otterville project @TorontoJazzFest, led by Andrew Downing. Slow melodies evocative of a summer day in a quiet village in a Southwestern Ontario. Relaxed pace, drew more laughter as the band was to "slow things down" on the next tune. (Heliconian Hall, Hazelton Avenue, Yorkville, Toronto, Ontario) 20180630 - Villiers Street
Looking south, new eastern bank of future Villiers Island is dry, with the Commissioners Street Bridge in place for 2024. Had to stand on short concrete construction cylinders to see over the barb wired fence and blue curtain. When the Don River is redirected from the westbound Keating Channel, this roadway today will have been dug out and underwater. (Villiers Street, Port Lands, Toronto, Ontario) 20220519 - Tafoni Trail
In amongst the redwoods, @JimSpohrer assesses the probability of the Tafoni Sandstone Monolith rolling downhill as minimal. The honeycomb weathering takes thousands of years as water dissolves calcite and redeposits as crystals, resulting in craters and bulges. Five mile hike outbound on Tafoni Trail, led down to valley stream, concluding with a long incline back on the Fir Trail. - Riverside
Party for da shou extended an extra day, as guests arrived one day late by mistake. Happy to open up a bottle of Valpolicella for a catch-up conversation, it's better that they drove on a clear day from Collingwood. Sons weren't so involved, one gone on a flight for a holiday in Utah. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20171230 - Tracks west from Commercial Drive
Downtown Vancouver in the distance, late on a rainy afternoon. North of East Broadway, south of Grandview Highway, rail is the faster way into the city centre. Coming on the Skytrain eastbound, it was a long way from the previous station, and the route turned south before continuing east (Vancouver) 20120309 1724 - Vegan Raw Festival
Christmas Cannelloni, with zucchini was wrap, red pepper and arugula for festive colours, cheese of cashews, agave, lemon juice and beetroot. Delicious. Free samples courtesy of Jennifer Italiano and her chef, from Live Food Bar (Toronto) 20111203 1438 - SystemsThinking/TO
Systemic insurrection after ST/TO formal program. I invited anyone who wanted to discuss "why I disagreed with 90% of the presentation on Innovation Engineering" to pull up a chair, and stay for a chat. Emergent multi-way discussion backed up by theoretical and historical recall by Stephen Regoczei. This was an emergent thread from a one-way talking-head agenda, future meetings may seek to be more participative. Photo courtesy of Chris Chapman. - Thanksgiving dinner
Opening home to extended family and friends, for a non-turkey menu. Main course of Chinese beef stew, plus vegan mushrooms with beancurd sticks (foo jook), gai lan (broccoli), fuzzy melon (dit gwa) soup, beet-carrot salad. Vegan pumpkin pie and coconut milk ice cream to accommodate dietary restrictions. Of all attendees, I was the one who liked turkey most, before I gave up meat. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20181007 - Heliconian Hall
Quintet @Soren_Nissen @TorontoJazzFest performs music inspired by months living in India, composed after return to Toronto. Closing evening of the festival, some exterior signs have already been removed. (Heliconian Hall, Hazelton Avenue, Yorkville, Toronto, Ontario) 20180701 - Vanilla Rockbund
Colleague out of town presented an opportunity for more deeply acquainting with the spouse. Discussed life in Shanghai, the history and status of Finland over the past 25 years, and upcoming options for residencies elsewhere in the world. No alcohol consumed, it's a school night! Venue was trendier than our usual style, the four millennial women at the next table were preoccupied with their mobile phones, and taking selfies. (Vanilla Rockbund, Beijing East Road, Shanghai, PR China) 20180423 - Laneway demolition
Just up our street, one of the houses is having its garage demolished. The backhoe excavator was small, and the dump truck to remove the detritus was practically the full width of our laneway. We have construction at the top of our street, the middle of our street, and major plans coming for the bottom of our street. (Booth Avenue, Riverside district, Toronto, Ontario) 20170620
