- Booth Avenue berries in snow
The red berries are still on the mountain ash tree next door, boughs weighed down by snow. The first time that I've had to shovel the walk in front of our house in Toronto this year, after Christmas. Trying to be productive during the workdays, physical activity deferred until almost desk. (Toronto Riverside) 20121227 1655 - Booth Avenue
Lightning struck tree, three fire trucks for house south of us. Hose filled briefly to extinguish for in tall tree. Electrical power to the block is off, wondering if transformer is impacted. Heavy rain is subsiding. (Booth Avenue, Riverside district, Toronto, Ontario) 20170804 - Bookstore pizza
Relaxed lunch by main square in town. Sat in the spirituality book section while enjoying the half of the thin crust pizza that didn't have cheese on it. A break from another day of writing on the computer. (Revelations Cafe, Fairfield, Iowa) 20141210 - Books on Pattern Language

Runners in shorts, dog walkers, baby strollers enjoying the warm September dusk, before the dark brings cool. Expect good weather tomorrow. - Blue Water Bridge view north
Crossing St. Clair River westbound from Sarnia to Port Huron on a Tuesday noon means no delays. Landmark lighthouse, is that a boat? - Blossoms UHull
Pink blossoms having a tough time flourishing in early British springtime, by the U. of Hull. More warmth and sunshine might help. (Hull, UK) 20120420 1251 - Blood pressure 129 over 84
Had acupuncture to relieve fatigue. Mental and visual acuity restored. Afterwards, Dr. David Lam took my blood pressure, finding it 129/84, which is normal for me. In May, after trip to Las Vegas, blood pressure was low, at 109/84. - Block Museum of Art
Kristine Aono (2017) "The Nail That Sticks Up The Furthest", 120,313 holes, some with nails, over copies of the testimonies given during the 1981-1983 Commission on Wartime Relocation and Interment of Civilians. One hole for each Japanese American interred during WWII. Installation is across campus from Kellogg School 35th class reunion. (Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois) 20170505 - Bliss Chinese Cuisine
Honoured to share afternoon with cousin bride, and meet the groom for the first time. Banquet of 10 courses as per tradition, we observed the couple visiting table-by-table, leading toasts and chatting with guests. Lion dance and comedian were unusual, heartfelt thanks to parents closed the festivities. (Bliss Chinese Cuisine, Mississauga Road, Mississauga, Ontario) 20201210 - Bliss Chinese Cuisine
Family weddings are a rare occasion to catch up with extended family, convening from around the province. Stories related about unfortunate scheduling, recent births, and infants sequestered away from crowds. The increased height of children is a reminder that we should visit more frequently. (Bliss Chinese Cuisine, Mississauga Road, Mississauga, Ontario) 20221210 - Blaze Pizza
Vegan cheese for everyone, but separate orders for meat, vegan and gluten-free preferences. Quick and easy snack across the street from movie theatre, most of us hadn't tried this made-to-order single serving sized chain restaurant. A small luxury that we can easily repeat. (Blaze Pizza, John Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20190309 - Bitter
Comparing @snousala @doug_schuler radical approaches to higher education that enable students to learn differently. Signals that China is changing pedagogical approaches for new young leaders, and investing heavily in academic research and advanced education in ways not apparent in the west. (Bitter, Wuyuan Lu, French Concession, Shanghai, PR China) - Bissell Building
Vision by @smgrimes for prior @SemaphoreTO research cluster launched in 2012, amalgamating into @kmdi established 1996 @UofTInfoFaculty. Renewed energy for design-oriented research and research-oriented design with more public discussion on people's issues with technology, including the marginalized. This generation of researchers share philosophical roots in critical theory. (Bissell Building, Faculty of Information, St. George Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20190129 - Bissell Building
Understanding #Tablets in Early Childhood Education @rhondamcewen @KDMI Semaphore speaker series @UofTInfoFaculty. Research based on communication theory by #NiklasLuhmann. Attentional deficits in children are already there, but tablets make it worse. Not much better than flash cards, as developers don't encourage instructing or exploring concepts, mostly tap and drag, dumbing down rather than featuring other modes (e.g. blowing into a device). Gestures can change the way that knowledge is conceptually understood, not just on working memory, but long term memory.
