- Sunday morning dim sum
Routing back home, Adam and Ayaka hosted us for brunch at a Chinese restaurant nearby. The popular dim sum selections are available from the pushcarts, and we ordered rice noodles from the kitchen. Clientele was predominantly non-Asian, so some entertainment from first-time diners at the next table. I now have a little headache and a slight feeling of depression, so it's either the warm summer humidity, or the MSG level is higher than back home. (Golden Harvest, Warren, Michigan) 20150802 - Tikkurila Station
New Ring Rail Line to Helsinki Airport means a connection at Tikkurila to commuter service to Hämeenlinna, rather than taking the bus as on previous trips. Buying tickets from machine was easy. Disoriented when scheduled train displayed destination of Riihimäki, when expected routing towards Tampere. After boarding, we were informed that the front few rail cars detach from the series at Riihimäki, to continue towards Tampere. A helpful conductor told us that we could chill, and would have enough time at Riihimäki to take our luggage off, and move to the front of the train. (Tikkurila Station, Vantaa, Finland) 20150930 - Landlocked green space
Discovered Cairns Avenue Parkette, a filled-in ravine where Cairns Creek used to flow south into Small's Pond before 1935. Surrounded by back yards of houses, it's a ditch with higher grassy areas enjoyed by dogs and their walkers. Entrance on the west side, no exit any other direction. Historical research explains the strange routing of roads in east end Toronto. (Highcroft Road, Upper Beaches, East Toronto) 20150809. "A brief history of Small's Pond, used then abused" | Chris Bateman | April 21, 2014 | BlogTO at www.blogto.com/city/2012/04/a_brief_history_of_smalls_pon... - East Chinatown
Trinity Supermarket at 587 Gerrard Street East was closed when we came back from travels, and now seems permanently shut. Disappointed that our neighbourhood stores aren't doing so well lately, probably due to bright and shiny big box competitors. Hopefully, the demise of one store will boost the business for the other supermarket down the street, Fu Yao. (East Chinatown, Toronto) 20151030 - Glen Road bridge
Tranquil view south over Rosedale Valley to tunnel by Sherbourne TTC station east exit, tunnel under Bloor Street above, then Howard Street and the towers of St. Jamestown. Despite having been around Toronto for 40 years, still discovering nooks off the beaten path while bicycling around town. (Glen Road bridge, Toronto, Ontario) 20150608 - Satay House
Intercept lunch on way from Toronto to Iowa. Usually would visit overnight, but short schedule made 12+ hour drive the plan. Neighbourhood has large choice of Asian restaurants, so when Viet resto was closed on Wednesday, AHI redirected is to Malaysian. (Satay House, Madison Heights, Michigan) 20151125 - Argiro Student Center queue
Vegetarian lunch was a good excuse to visit the Maharishi School of Management, but the lineup to enter the cafeteria servery was too long. We ran up the exit staircase to peek into one dining hall, where finding a table for a group of four would have been a challenge. Lots of people moving around with food on trays. Parking lots outside were full. With the menu of the day feature Chinese sweet and sour tofu, we opted for the buffet at Pizza Ranch in town (and ate too much, there). (Argiro Student Center, Maharishi School of Management, Fairfield, Iowa) 20150729 - Main entrance to Guildford Cathedral
Angel musicians engraved in glass by John Hutton are inset into bronze doors. One glass panel was vandalised in 2009, and restored by a protégé of the original artist a year later. Guildford Cathedral was consecrated in 1961, one of three modern cathedrals of the Church of England, the others in Liverpool in 1978, the other in St. Albans in 1877. Cathedral is by the south end of the university, had afternoon stroll up and down hills as a break from sitting. (Guildford Cathedral, Surrey, UK) 20150709 - Dreampop jazz @BurdockTO
Emma Frank @torontojazzfest stretches the genre with contemporary vocal phrasing and pacing. Isis Geraldo on keyboard, Simon Millerd on trumpet. Drums and string bass follow the Montreal style of musicality, pushing the rhythm forward. (Burdock Music Hall, Toronto) 20150618 - DIA
Alexander Calder 1970 La jeune filles et sa suites, on the lawn outside the Detroit Institute of the Arts, towers over local visitors. Family touring on a Sunday afternoon. (Detroit, Michigan) 20150419 - Arabiakeskus
Red berries on trees, approaching the Hämeentie Factory Block of the Arabia district, known for its long history in design. Are those rowan (mountain ash) trees? Attended the "Creating the Mindset of Sustainable Societies" class, one of the core courses in the Master's Programme in Creative Sustainability at Aalto University. Caught afternoon student presentations on final day of class. Challenged to be critical when prior context of assignments wasn't fully explained. Will see the students two more days this week. (Arabiakeskus, Helsinki, Finland) 20151006 - Susisaari
Permaculture in a Suomenlinna home, letting the chickens out of the coop for a few minutes around the yard. Chickens are productive at 5 or 6 eggs per day. House originally was built by a Russian general in the year before the czar fell in the revolution of 1917. Living spaces are gradually being modernized, while conforming to condition that the exterior is be preserved, as part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. (Susisaari, Suomenlinna, Helsinki, Finland) 20151011 - Old Church Park
Grave markers at Plague Park Ruttopuisto, some from the thousand victims of the 1710 plague. The park was a cemetery from the 1780s until 1829. Pedestrians walk by the site on Bulevardi on the way to Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and the West Harbour, without a second thought. (Old Church Park, Vanha kirkkopuisto, Bulevardi, Helsinki, Finland) 20151008 - Sushi in Clawson Michigan
Adam ordered 50 piece party platter for three of us, just before kitchen closed. Noble Fish is reputed to be the best sushi around Detroit, and we agree it was great. There's a few tables and a sushi bar at the back of a Japanese grocery store, so a lot of clients prefer takeout. This is walking distance from Adam's place. (Noble Fish, 14 Mile Road, Clawson, Michigan) 20150724 - Sky Dragon
BBQ meat appetiser plate starts Harvest Moon Festival dinner with the Lowkong Society. Saturday night is unusual, as sons usually get invited on Sunday nights after grandfather's monthly board meetings. Table has clear window view of the rooftop terrace, attracting only the occasional smoker. (Sky Dragon Restaurant, Spadina Chinatown, Toronto) 20150919
