- Nathan Phillips Square
Rink is cleared of skaters for 13 minutes, open for midday resurfacing with the Zamboni. Obedient crowds left the ice within a minute of guards blowing whistles and an announcement over the loudspeaker. Expect an even larger mob approaching midnight, as entertainers on the stage counts down to the new year. (Nathan Phillips Square, Queen Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20181231 - Chinese Heritage Society of Canada
Welcomed into study group by I Ching master Benfeng Zhu. Lessons are practically held in Mandarin Chinese, so aided by bilingual learners to appreciate throwing of coins, sketching hexagrams, and interpreting changes. My reading of multiple books translated into English, plus smartphone apps, have gotten me beyond beginner's level. Deeper insight into the underlying five elements theory, and its relation to lunar calendar, will require more scholarly inquiry. The group clubhouse, active for one year, overlooks a pedestrian bridge over a small stream feeding into Petticoat Creek. (Chinese Heritage Society of Canada, Kingston Road, Pickering, Ontario) 20181224 - Munk School
Munk School: Trends and outlooks for Asian countries @Bartapest @ADB_America @munkschool. Asian countries have to deal with the most climatic tragedies in the world, e.g. typhoons. Rapid urbanization, as well as poverty in rural areas. Population is getting old before they’re getting rich. To fill labour gaps countries could open more doors to migrants. (Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, Devonshire Place, University of Toronto) 20181210 - CSI Spadina
Systems Thinking peer circle #ClimateVentures @csiTO trying examples on @Andy_Boynton #BartVictor @JoePine. Product-Process Change Matrix with (i) Invention and Mass Production where demand > supply; (ii) Continuous Improvement and Mass Customization where supply > demand. These entrepreneurs found these explained a lot of the challenges they're experiencing. (Climate Ventures, Centre for Social Innovation, Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20181203 - Climate Ventures
Systems thinking peer circle @csiTO, on @longnow history, @stewartbrand How Buildings Learn pacing layers. Fast gets all the attention; Slow has all the power. (Climate Ventures, Centre for Social Innovation, 192 Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20181112 - Spoke Club
Design ladder @hallahelga @honnunarmidstod with DesignTOFest promoting @IcelandNatural. Step 1 No design; Step 2 Design as a style; Step 3 Design as a process; Step 4 Design as innovation; as illustrated by @designcentret . Design March @honnunarmars cited as the biggest design festival in the work per capita. With population of 330,000, everyone in Iceland knows @bjork or her mother. (The Spoke Club, King Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20181105 - YVR
Direct shuttle buses from U.S. arrivals immigration to domestic Canadian gates removes prior anxieties of racing across the YVR terminal, and having to go through x-ray security a second time. A human guide giving directions is welcomed, but an exterior route outside the terminal could be chilly in winter. This expediting suggests the terminal layout might not have been as well done as originally thought. (Vancouver International Airport, British Columbia) 20181029 - CSI 192
First Climate Ventures peer circle on Systems Thinking @csiTO. Sketching on flipchart sheet as a reference artifact to keep track of conversation on the complex versus the complicated. Informal meeting was scheduled on short notice, we'll try to meet Monday afternoons every three weeks. (Centre for Social innovation, 192 Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20181022 - Old Vic
Thanksgiving Day @VicCollege_UofT with some graduate students of History and Philosophy for Science and Technology in the office, late afternoon. Front door to building was locked. Scooped nephew up to bike downtown for jazz and turkey dinner. (Victoria College, University of Toronto, Charles Street, Toronto, Ontario 20181008 - Dentonia Park
Before sunset People & Trees @SarvenazRayati still setting up installation @artsinparksTO. Figures of bamboo sticks and paper mache are undoubtedly more impressive lit up in the dark, but then the trees would be harder to see. (Dentonia Park, Crescent Town, Toronto, Ontario) 20180924 - The Ossington
Interview @mervatim by @emilymkeeler relates history of Katherine Briggs and Isabel Myers leading to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, for the launch of The Personality Brokers book. Entertaining stories from English professor author and audience on misuse of projective personality techniques by managers. My teachings express human beings as more multidimensional, and I prefer the Keirsey temperament sorter more strongly aligned with Carl Jung. (The Ossington, Ossington Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20180917 - Richmond Station
Lit birthday candle for RDI's 25th birthday, on top of sesame cracker crumble, blueberry pearls and coconut sorbet. With a family of multiple bloggers, smartphone cameras came out. (Richmond Station, Richmond Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20180910 - Richmond Station
Fifth course into the custom tasting menu, rare beef tenderloin as another surprise dish. Our server asked if we were getting full, and we asked for bags for leftovers. About 2.5 hours into the 3-hour family celebration of RDI's 25th birthday. (Richmond Station, Richmond Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20180910 - Richmond Station
Attentive server describing each dish as it's placed before us, as we're surprised. A list of allergies was sent in advance, and then preferences were discussed with each of the dinner guests. She said they enjoy the challenge of creativity. In the background the pastry chef was also managing the oven, warming up those sitting towards the west side of the 3-hour family celebration of RDI's 25th birthday. (Richmond Station, Richmond Street West, Toronto, Ontario) 20180910 - Richmond Station
Grill chief in open kitchen topping salmon roe onto salmon filets, as fourth on a custom tasting menu. Five orders similarly plated, and the sixth a vegan variation.
