- Centre for Social Innovation
Tried "Innovator for a Day" at @csiTO 215 Spadina. Got building orientation by a Community Animator. Picked a good day to visit, with Salad Day community building, then Town Hall as the move to 192 Spadina in September advances. Lots of energy in the place. (Centre for Social Innovation, 215 Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20180605 - Maple Leaf Square
Bass booms from Drake concert shook the 24th floor apartment in building next door to the Scotiabank Arena. Our host hasn't heard a concert that loud, before. Brief torrential downpours earlier in the evening subsided, I wished I had biked over instead of taking the streetcar and subway. (Maple Leaf Square, Bremner Boulevard, Toronto, Ontario) 20180821 - CSI 192
First salad day @csiTO, second official day in new building after the move across the street. Acknowledgement of traditional lands, plus back stories from DECAs. Conversation tables set up with suggested discussion starters on the theme of home. Contributed homemade daikon carrot pickle resulting from spouse having bought too many root vegetables. I'm not Vietnamese, but can follow a simple recipe. (Centre for Social innovation, 192 Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Ontario) 20180925 - St. Michael's Eye Clinic
Ophthalmological surgeon @StMikesHospital with model of eye, explaining posterior capsule opacification that was causing haziness in the left eye, following surgery for a trauma-induced cataract repaired in 2006. Performed YAG laser capsulotomy to open up an aperture through epithelial cells proliferating towards the visual axis. Procedure was painless, with a minor sensation of hearing clicking inside my head, when the laser was on. Preparation took a few years, working through prescription eye drop variants that would eventually reduce eye pressure. (St. Michael's Hospital Eye Clinic, Queen Street East, Toronto, Ontario) 20180918 - James Madison Park
Sunset on Lake Mendota, just north of state capital building. Further along the shore, U. Wisconsin Madison campus, where i attended in an ISSS meeting in 2008. Only a short visit on this routing, to deepen some intuitions on systems knowledge with a retired professor. (James Madison Park, E. Gorham Street, Madison, WI) 20180814 - Riverside neighbourhood
Urban foresters pruning our city-owned tree away from electrical power lines, viewed from our second-floor bedroom window. The cutter in the bucket and driver clearing falling debris were working their way down the street. Preventive maintenance of essential infrastructure shows good long-term planning in our municipality. (Riverside neighbourhood, Toronto, Ontario) 20180403 - Cineplex Queensway
Tuesday Matinee viewing of Avengers Infinity War in UltraAVX non-3D is a lot to absorb, having to recall linkages over 10 years of movies. Between prior 16-day trip and upcoming 10-day trip, squeezing in regular life is a luxury. (Cineplex Cinema Queensway, Etobicoke, Ontario) 20180501 - Vari Centre
Internet bots talk @gtalug by Don Tai at a leisurely pace. Venue moved to huge lecture theatre, audience actually sitting close to the front. Informed participants contributing comments interactively. (GTA Linux User Group, George Vari Engineering and Computer Centre, Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario) 20180710 - Long Museum West Bund
Long taxi ride back over Huangpu River to newly developing West Bund neighbourhood. Enjoyed "Asian Impression" of contemporary Chinese, Japanese and South Korean art. Downstairs gallery included Shi Yongjun (2012) "Daily Routine"; Li Jikai 2009 "On a Dumped Riprap"; Tu Hongtoa (2006) "Pure Landscape"; and Luo Quanmu (2007) "Lost Deer". Also saw the movie set of Yong Fudong (2018) "Dawn Breaking"; of 30-day filming, each day complemented by a video diary of crews at work. Venue is so far upstream on the river that familiar Bund sights aren't visible from the banks. (Long Museum West Bund, Longteng Avenue, Xuhui District, Shanghai, PR China) 20180425 - Athlete's Care, The Beach
First visit to physiotherapist for Achilles tendon recovery. Scheduled appointments twice per week for the month until we get on the plane for Shanghai. Flexibility of right ankle is at 25% of left ankle. Initial exercises assigned to stretch for mobility, strength will be the next priority. Went shopping, bought foam roller stick. (Athlete's Care, The Beach, Queen Street East, Toronto, Ontario) 20180313 - Veggie Garden
Meeting AHI's circle of friends, social media means everyone is well-briefed on recent news. Some had seen RDI on a prior trip, didn't know there are more brothers at home. Vegan duck unanimously voted as outstanding. (Veggie Garden, El Camino Real, Mountain View, California) 20180515 - Lifelabs
A series of waiting rooms for medical labs and clinics all in on morning is better than making multiple trips. Following through on previously-scheduled appointments was manageable with Uber rides, crutches and a found wheelchair at the hospital. (Lifelabs, Queen Street East, Toronto, Ontario) 20180102 - OCADU
69th meeting of @StronglySustain with web conferencing, featuring update on Flourishing Enterprise Innovation Toollkit Project. Watched experience report video from a First Explorer. Participants included both some from the founding, through to some coming new to the work. Had post-meeting discussion on activities in parallel communities. (OCADU, 100 McCaul Street, Toronto, Ontario) 20180313 - CASCON
Qubits #casconquantum by @jessicapointing explained with two-sided donuts that flip. Applications of exponential complexity that are computationally hard in binary von Neumann architecture may be tractably linear with quantum computing. Today's quantum hardware is still at the state where vacuum tubes were in the 1950s, we might expect coevolving knowledge development in coming decades. (CASCON, 28th Annual International Conference on Computer Science and Software Engineering, Hilton Suites, Markham) 20181030 - Cineplex Eglinton
Experimented with Black Panther in a 2D IMAX conventional room. Enjoyed the movie, but can't say that the image quality was noticeably better than on a regular screen. Seat was about 1/3 from the front, dead center, so screen filled field of view. For a 4pm Tuesday movie, there were less than 20 customers, so viewers may have targeted the 7pm 3D version. (Cineplex Eglinton Town Centre, Lebovic Avenue, Scarborough, Ontario) 20180227
